Low fibre food ideas- quick! before I starve to death!

Okay. I've got to go to hospital on Wednesday for a colonoscopy to check for bowel cancer. Therefore I've been given a list of what I can/can't eat in the days leading up to it.

Apparently today a diet low in fibre only . They suggest eggs, cheese, and ice cream. Given that I can't make an omelette to save my life, does anyone have any ideas? Cos I'm really fucking hungry. (And does the flavour of the ice-cream make a difference?)

(What makes it worse is that having been told to avoid vegetables in any form, I now realise what a twat I was saving half the delicious Indian takeaway selection I bought last night, which is now just sitting there taunting me in all its vegetabley goodness.)

You could make scrambled eggs - they're harder to fuck up than an omelette - just keep the heat low and stir. Beat eggs + milk + wee bit of butter, low heat, stir until wobbly. Pepper.

Grilled halloumi?

pointless and uncalled for

The flavour of ice-cream makes no difference, it is just flavour and rarely even has parts that constituted what gives the flavour in the first place.

You could scramble the eggs, flavour with cheese or other condiments. It'll probably seem a little tired by the end of the day but it is only a few days.

Cheesecake should be an option as well, provided you don't get busy on the biscuity crust.

Best advice is to wander the aisles of you local supermarket and stock up on anything that is mostly dairy products.

Consider getting something to move the lot afterwards as well as a low fibre diet is likely to become a unwelcome internal guest by Wednesday.

Oh, believe me, I've just read the instructions on the stuff I've been provided with to move the lot. Now that looks like some scary liquid.

Grilled halloumi... fuck yes.

Are you a vegetarian, Chairman?

that

Chocolate. Custard probably. Milkshakes. All sorts of yoghurt. The aforementioned cheese, eggs and ice-cream.

And best of luck at the hospital.

Yes, I'm a vegetarian. But you can get vegetarian halloumi, so I'm sorted.

(And I don't think meat-eaters have it much better- apparently you're not allowed to eat meat or fish either.)

Cheers, everyone... I've just been out and bought a whole bunch of cheese, bread and eggs. (I'm thinking maybe egg-fried rice- white rice, obviously- cos I know I can cook that. It won't be the same without the onion, though...)

oh, and from a site on low fibre diets:

Where else can I get help?

If the diet is prescribed by the doctor for a medical condition, then help should be sought from a State Registered Dietitian who can help assess if the diet is nutritionally balanced. All doctors have access to a dietitian within the NHS alternatively you can contact the British Dietetic Association who can provide names of qualified dietitians who offer their services privately and who are able to help.

if you like Indian food, how about Paneer? cook with spices. yum. hard-boiled eggs are also delish curried.
cook em, then fry spices just as you would for a curry, and fry the whole egg until it gets coated with spices. then add water/stock/gravy ingredients and simmer for a while. yuummy yummy. (think this is a v. bengali thing.)

Curried eggs sound like they could rock. Tofu I've been wondering about, cos then I could have like egg noodles & tofu, which would be yummy.

Gelatin.

According to this useful list, yogurt is out, but noodles and white rice are in. Farina good, oatmeal bad. Vegetable juice good. Seedless cooked vegetables good. (Spaghetti & clam sauce, then?)

No seeds, nuts, popcorn.

This similar list says melon is good, mashed potatoes (no skins) good, tofu is good.
Tempeh not good, broccoli/cauliflower family not good.

Deep fried also not good - no french fries, no age tofu. Alas.

Got a blender? Bananas and tofu, a little bit of honey.... mmm.

Neither list mentions mushrooms. Splash of olive oil, a little garlic, shiitake mushrooms, white wine, heat it up, stir in heavy cream, reduce until thick, and hey! you've got some fancy-damn tasting sauce for pasta.
(the trick is to stir the cream in a little at a time, until it permeates everything.)

This laparoscope-specific diet page gives mushrooms the big thumbs up. So you're set there.
Oh, but no crisps!

By the way, Bengali - tried some curried hard boiled eggs last night. They were great. You rock.

If you're still low fiber, try 'em. Heck, even if you're not. Mmm.

I'm actually "nil by mouth" at the moment. But I'm gonna try 'em on Thursday, I reckon.
