How quickly can I get a new passport?

Please excuse my laziness, but I'm at work doing weekend overtime and 'phoning the Post Office isn't really an option. I've accepted an invitation to a psychiatric conference in Antwerp on March 6th and just realised my ten-year passport has expired. I need to replace it pronto, but am obviously a decade behind on the hows, whats and wheres. One of my colleagues tells me it's possible to get a new passport in one day (presumably with a lot of queuing) but is vague on the details.

Anyone up on this? And, while I'm at it, what's Antwerp like?

Had a passport crisis myself a little while ago. Have all your forms and shit ready, be first in the queue when it opens (which will mean getting up at about 4am) and you'll probably be out within half an hour. Hopefully, they'll have it done within the week - although if it's that short notice, it might only be a yearly one.

Not sure what your time frame is, but that site has a section on urgent applications. Apparently stuff has changed since I got my passport at 16, but you can get a passport within 48 hours. That site tells you how.

Until the moderation request goes through, for deletion of my first post and modifications to my third, I meant 48 hours. Duh.

Antwerp - pleasant town, but the zoo is disgusting and should be avoided at all costs (I went ages ago and that's my abiding memory of it... sad animals in cramped and drab cages, and, almost worse, sad birds in cramped and drab cages. It was the birds of prey that got me - they scarcely had room to spread their wings.)

I was going to Sweden last year and I realised my passport had expired on the day of my flight. The next day, I turned up at Petit France in the morning (not even stupidly early), waited around for a few hours, paid a bit of money, got it renewed, went straight to the airport, flew out and was only a day late.

Not sure if this is still the case, but British Airways used to have a passport service where they do the queing/shit for you. I dealt with Ralph on 020 7434 4635 (no idea if he is still there) in the Regent Street office.
