I'm currently doing a bit of housekeeping on my blog's sidebar, including the inclusion of some referencey stuff.

Here's some of the links I've added:

Google
Wikipedia
Dictionary.com
Encyclopedia.com
Webopedia
Quoteland.com
Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable
Bartlett's Familiar Quotations
Word of the day
A.Word.A.Day
Lonely Planet Online

What reference sites would 'Lithers recommend? Also, what news sites do you find most useful?

Ok, here's a couple of reference sites that I keep an eye on, whether or not I'm travelling. Both have loads of interesting info, and the London Transport one even has little maps, showing which lines are disrupted. In real time. And it lists all the bus routes in London. Incredible!! So go to:

Transport for London, and
Railtrack.

For most of my mainstream news, I check out The Guardian as it tends to be fairly up to date.

I'll get my anorak....

Dictionary.com always strikes me as a bit of an "abridged webster's student" kind of dictionary, but that's not exactly an informed opinion. I like bartleby.com as a dictionary/thesaurus resource. Bartleby uses the American Heritage dictionary, has lots of other standard references onsite.

AllMusic.com is like the IMDB for bands, I think.

Love bartleby, too.

And I wouldn't be anywhere without The Straight Dope.

How Stuff Works is useful in finding out, well, how stuff works.
"Stuff" being anything from airplanes to electrons to investment accounts.

For news, I typically use google's news search and average the headlines, if that makes sense.

I'd also like to recommend the CIA World Factbook, but I'm not linking to it because www.cia.gov appears to have gone offline. (Consider that one, if you will. Those darned terrorists!) It's sort of like an Atlas with little cultural & geological summaries. The entry on Guernsey is pretty fascinating.

Erowid may be a useful link to have, as might this search engine.

What about a link to symantec or somebody else who does computer virus news/explanations? And www.whois.sc is good for looking up who's behind a site.

News -- I usually read the Guardian and the BBC, and sometimes the New York Times.

Wicked link! I've been meaning to refresh my "favourites" for ages so this is just what I need.

Further to some of the ones already listed I would recommend:
Streetmap
ABC Counties has an excellent gazetteer to find out where towns are in the UK.
London for free
CIA world factbook a bit out of date, but still a useful tool if you need to know basic information on a country.
World Clock
Holiday Festivals for when you need to know if people in a certain country are at work or not!

I think the correct term is Pop-up Hell They are pretty damn evil especially if it's one of those full screen ones, or one with a lovely animated gif of someone getting a blow-job (when your at work)

Yeah IMDB is a must though, I was very happy when I found that site many moons ago.

I'm liking this thread! - because obviously I'm not spending enough time on the internet when I'm supposed to be working. I use (pretty obvious) Amazon for books in print and reviews etc - anyone got any better book resources?

DAMMIT! That's because I put a "the" in the URL. It's www.straightdope.com. I put a fix in. Sorry - go to new URL, no pop ups, and all the info you'll ever need about anything.

Oh, if you want directions to anywhere in the US (and now, a few other countries too):
Mapquest.

Which is a lot of fun when you combine it with the aerial/satellite photo database at TerraServer.

That should be an image of my neighborhood. The street running left to right across the top is Hansen, and the one running up and down slightly right of center is Garden. My house is middle of the block, south of Hansen, west side of Garden. The one obscured by mango trees.

E-books! Includes pretty much everything (I know that's sweeping, but really, TONS of stuff) out-of-copyright, and stacks more stuff that isn't but the holders want it availlable. Takes a bit of searching through but it beats 6 hours and a ton of stress down the library.

Like Gutenberg, but with copyright violations. Lots of 'em. Some pretty neat stuff: Borges, Gibson, No Logo, Empire...
