What is with Irish Radio and Johnny Cash?

So I'm listening to Phantom FM over the web, and I swear they play more Johnny Cash then any other station in the world. In fact, they mostly play Johnny Cash covering other bands, like U2.

Why the hell is that?

Irish people like him! A friend of mine had her relatives come over from Ireland years ago, and they all their pictures taken in front of the "Johnny Cash" bank machines.

(I don't know why, but the Canada Trust bank machines had signs saying 'Johnny Cash' when I was a kid)

Her Irish parents were also huge country and western fans... Look at U2 in Rattle in Hum with their 'we love America! We're at Graceland! And Sun Studios!'. It must be an Irish thing...

"San Quentin, you've been livin' hell to me
You've hosted me since nineteen sixty three
I've seen 'em come and go and I've seen them die
And long ago I stopped askin' why

San Quentin, I hate every inch of you.
You've cut me and have scarred me thru an' thru.
And I'll walk out a wiser weaker man;
Mister Congressman why can't you understand.

San Quentin, what good do you think you do?
Do you think I'll be different when you're through?
You bent my heart and mind and you may my soul,
And your stone walls turn my blood a little cold.

San Quentin, may you rot and burn in hell.
May your walls fall and may I live to tell.
May all the world forget you ever stood.
And may all the world regret you did no good.

San Quentin, you've been livin' hell to me."

Johnny Cash, 1969

Why Do Irish people love country and western so much? I visit a local Irish pub that has live bands (The Lord Nelson, Holloway Road) and every Showband over from the Emerald Isle plays C&W standards!!

When I was over in Ireland in the summer, I kept trying to find unique, live, Irish music, but nearly every club had C&W, which I somewhat detest. It drove me crazy.

Now I just sit at home and listen to Flogging Molly over and over again.

Good God! What Pubs were you people in? Were you expecting good music in Orish tourist pubs? Drinking in redneck bars?
Most Irish people avoid these places, you should too.
Phantom FM play the Johnny Cash covers cause they’re so good.
