LOL, I read that as I ONLY CAME OUT TO GET THE PAPERS, imagining some poor guy just walking to the shops and getting swept along by the march!!

At Hyde park there was a rather wonderful banner:

Cuddle the War to Death.

all spellt out in floral fabric letters.

Made me think of Haus at once.

The 'down with this sort of thing' guy, wandering along near the 'make tea not war' guy, made my day.

The 'gulf sale' placards were ace as well.

Now, I can see why "Fuck Off Bush, You Cunt" is amusing; but don't you think it's maybe a counterproductive slogan in that it's just inarticulate rage and fairly easy to dismiss?

I think we're talking favourite slogans here, not commenting on their (theoretical) effectiveness...

Can I then, within the remit (is that the right word?) of this thread, say how much I hate 'Fuck Off Bush You Cunt'? Just like I hate the way people keep saying that Blair is sucking Bush's cock and stuff like that. As Tori Amos sang:

I believe in defending
in what we once
stood for
It seems in vogue
to be a closet
misogynist homophobe

Calling Bush a cunt is an insult to cunts and it fucks me off royally. Saying that Blair is a cocksucking little toadie is completely homophobic and it disgusts me to see that sort of thing unexamined on Barbelith.

i used my 'drop yer drawers, not yer bombs' rewrite of an earlier suggestion most of the day, on and off.
i also liked the banner i saw that warned tony to keep his hands clean of bloody bush. it was being wielded by two spanish ladies, who may not have fully understood why i was laughing so much...

I think you quite right to bring it up about the insults and stuff, it's kind of a non-violent release of anger thing. Which brings us to the connection of violent thought leading to violent action issue, but that's well off-topic.

I feel kind of ashamed now, but in my defence I think that it's a healthier way to deal with my anger that going out and smashing people up. It's definitely not the most constructive criticism to say the least, but then nor is a lot of satire, even of the less crude variety.

Thanks for picking us up on it dude.

I really loved 'Fuck Off Bush You Cunt' it just seemed to articulate the way I feel about him. I'm not afraid to say I hate that man, that I hated him before he was president and yes I hate the possibility of action against Iraq even more because he's behind it (and I don't mind the use of the word 'cunt' because I just view it as another swear word and I don't associate any swear words with their meanings. It seems so pointless and a little too perfect and I reiterate that I do hate perfection because really it doesn't exist), illogical as that may seem, it's just that he's the one individual that is so the epitome of every possible administrative wrong that I can conceive of. He's just a murderer with a lot of power.

For me, it was its inarticulacy that made the 'Cunt' banner funny - amongst the forest of relatively clever puns and sincere entreaties, its clumsiness was like a bracing slap in the face. While I'm in broad agreement with you, Cholister, that casual misogyny ain't nice (and that cunts are, essentially, undeserving of a comparison with Dubya), that banner - within its particular context - made me laugh out loud.

Given Bush's surname and the 'TWAT' acronym, it's perhaps unsurprising that gynaecological humour was by no means uncommon...

Yeah, there was the girl with the banner with merkin attached reading "The only Bush I trust- my own" which was also funny.

And- credit where credit's due- Ganesh said "shit won't fuck itself up, y'know" first. I just stole it.

See Slinky I still prefer 'Fuck off Bush you cunt' and yeah, agreeing with what Ganesh has to say above wholeheartedly and plus the flag was the wrong way round and it was so delightfully incompetent. Definitely my favourite... but I still agree with it mostly because I would love to say those words to him!

What's a merkin?

Matthew Fluxington

A merkin is a pubic hair wig. Meaning, you wear it to simulate the appearance of having pubic hair.

When I read this thread, I just get sort of sad because it seems to me that these banners/posters are more the like the products of a clever poster contest rather than a serious attempt to have an effective protest, and that depresses me. It doesn't depress me nearly as much as every major newspaper covering the protests from a pro-war slant; but I do think that in some ways, the behavior of some protesters eggs the right wing papers on in how they are portrayed in the coverage of the events.

this was all before the rally took place, after which the thread blew up.

Completely agreed. All those well thought out 'clever' pun-based slogans just make me cringe, and fail to actually say any more than the cunt one. Something about utterly inarticulate, crude, offensive, dumb and nasty swearing is just so funny in that context..

Or in most contexts actually.

Not really a slogan as such, but one of the finest pieces of anti-war material was the letter written by ex-Python Terry Jones to the Observer at the end of January:

"Letter to the London Observer from Terry Jones.
Sunday 26 January 2003.

I'm really excited by George Bush's latest reason for bombing Iraq: he's running out of patience. And so am I! For some time now I've been really pissed off with Mr Johnson, who lives a couple of doors down the street. Well, him and Mr Patel, who runs the health food shop. They both give me queer looks, and I'm sure Mr Johnson is planning something nasty for me, but so far I haven't been able to discover what.
I've been round to his place a few times to see what he's up to, but he's got everything well hidden. That's how devious he is. As for Mr Patel, don't ask me how I know, I just know - from very good sources that he is, in reality, a Mass Murderer. I have leafleted the street telling them that if we don't act first, he'll pick us off one by one. Some of my neighbours say, if I've got proof, why don't I go to the police? But that's simply ridiculous. The police will say that they need evidence of a crime with which to charge my neighbours.

They'll come up with endless red tape and quibbling about the rights and wrongs of a pre-emptive strike and all the while Mr Johnson will be finalising his plans to do terrible things to me, while Mr Patel will be secretly murdering people. Since I'm the only one in the street with a decent range of automatic firearms, I reckon it's up to me to keep the peace. But until recently that's been a little difficult. Now, however, George W. Bush has made it clear that all I need to do is run out of patience, and then I can wade in and do whatever I want!

And let's face it, Mr Bush's carefully thought-out policy towards Iraq is the only way to bring about international peace and security. The one certain way to stop Muslim fundamentalist suicide bombers targeting the US or the UK is to bomb a few Muslim countries that have never threatened us.

That's why I want to blow up Mr Johnson's garage and kill his wife and children. Strike first! That'll teach him a lesson. Then he'll leave us in peace and stop peering at me in that totally unacceptable way. Mr Bush makes it clear that all he needs to know before bombing Iraq is that Saddam is a really nasty man and that he has weapons of mass destruction - even if no one can find them. I'm certain I've just as much justification for killing Mr Johnson's wife and children as Mr Bush has for bombing Iraq. Mr Bush's long-term aim is to make the world a safer place by eliminating 'rogue states' and 'terrorism'. It's such a clever long-term aim because how can you ever know when you've achieved it?

How will Mr Bush know when he's wiped out all terrorists? When every single terrorist is dead? But then a terrorist is only a terrorist once he's committed an act of terror. What about would-be terrorists? These are the ones you really want to eliminate, since most of the known terrorists, being suicide bombers, have already eliminated themselves. Perhaps Mr Bush needs to wipe out everyone who could possibly be a future terrorist? Maybe he can't be sure he's achieved his objective until every Muslim fundamentalist is dead? But then some moderate Muslims might convert to fundamentalism. Maybe the only really safe thing to do would be for Mr Bush to eliminate all Muslims?

It's the same in my street. Mr Johnson and Mr Patel are just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of other people in the street who I don't like and who - quite frankly - look at me in odd ways. No one will be really safe until I've wiped them all out. My wife says I might be going too far but I tell her I'm simply using the same logic as the President of the United States. That shuts her up.

Like Mr Bush, I've run out of patience, and if that's a good enough reason for the President, it's good enough for me. I'm going to give the whole street two weeks - no, 10 days - to come out in the open and hand over all aliens and interplanetary hijackers, galactic outlaws and interstellar terrorist masterminds, and if they don't hand them over nicely and say 'Thank you', I'm going to bomb the entire street to kingdom come. It's just as sane as what George W. Bush is proposing and, in contrast to what he's intending, my policy will destroy only one street.

Terry Jones"

Flux: again, this thread's here for people to talk about their favourite anti-war slogans, for whatever reason - clever, funny, offensive or otherwise. A discussion of "serious" or "effective" slogans would likely take a different form, and might not "depress" you so much. You may wish to start such a thread.

In the spirit of a day on which lots of different groups and individuals put aside the fact that they disagreed about many other issues, in order to oppose war with Iraq, I'd like to get in on this thread degenerating into a big scratchy fight.

So, my favourite banner made reference to the UK Prime Minister talking about Britain having to pay a "blood price" for freedom, democracy, Ford Mondeos etc...

paying the blood price? BLAIR'S BLOOD FIRST

Basically, Tony Blair should be executed live on national telly, and anyone who doesn't think so is some kind of apologist running dog for the "sensible Left".

Disagree with me...
