Living in London

As of March 4th, to hopefully around March 3rd, 2004, I will no longer be a Torontonian, but a Londoner!

To all those Barbelithers who live in this lovely city: Any hints on finding a flat? Anyone in need of a flatmate? Is it worth living in the outer zones for cheaper rent?

Any assistance and advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Barry.

As in, March 4th this year?

What's your rent-bracket? I've got to move somewhere quite soon...

don't want to dampen your spirits, barry, but be warned that rents in london are pretty horrendous these days. a single room, even in a deprived area like hackney, is likely to be around £400+ a month. there are cheaper places, but they go really quickly. i've been looking for a while and i'm hoping that i'll move into a friend's house when she moves out - word of mouth seems to be the best way.

and go for zones 2 or 3.

Best site I've found at the moment for renting a flat is -

Find a property

And for flat shares....

Move Flat

Have you tried the above one SFD - pretty cool you can create a shortlist by clicking on heading like, smoke, drinks, gay - hates football (no really )

We've got a room going RIGHT NOW! £280 a month (including gas & electricity). Only criteria, vegetarian house of dog-lovers.
PM me if you're at all interested- same goes for anyone else, or any of their friends.
(We've actually got 2- were going to rent them out as a package deal for £470 a month, but figured...)

Actually looks like we've only got one left now... just met one of my flatmate's colleagues who's looking for somewhere.
But yeah. original terms and conditions still apply. And it may be in Hackney, but it's the nicest part of Hackney (Church Street) and we've just repainted the kitchen, lounge and bathroom, so it's kind of nice.

Avoid the urban sprawl at all costs. Take a garret in Hampstead for £600 a month and work every hour God provides as a waiter/office slave while writing in your spare time only to be rejected by every publisher in the united kingdom while also recording music that no-one wants to listen to and acting in plays that get stinking reviews and experiencing relationship problems that are directly related to the cost of living in the world's most evil and corrupt public school boy mafia infested mega-city and resorting to drugs to blot out the horrible reality of... Oh! Sorry...

Just bumping this up, with the hopes that if anyone has any luxurious mansions going to waste, they'll let me know about them. I have to move out of this well-appointed matchbox rather soon (as in, by about the first week of March) and am getting The Fear...

good luck all of you on your househunting, council flat begging, etc. i wish that my expression of moral support could help in a more practical way to ensure that there would be a roof over all your fab heads...
alas.

Hey, does anyone know how hard it is to work under the table in London?

I'm starting to run lower on cash than I'd like, I really can't afford/don't want to go home at the mo and if I could make some quick cash there I'd love it. I'll pretty much do anything short of drug-dealing, prostitution and oh, I guess things that involve being really horrible to other people. If I could make some quick cash while visiting I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I figure you folks would know. What can you tell me? Anything?

From what I've heard, it's pretty easy to walk into a pub and ask to sweep up after hours. I'm assuming 'cash paid nightly'

Ha ha!

Y'all amuse me to no end.

I have a beatiful lakefront apartment that runs me $200 a month. Sure, its not in a city, but it is very very nice and right near the highway.

Anyone know of any decent rooms going?

Anything? Anyone?

This is getting serious... I saw the worst room last night - shown around by someone who kept calling me "Ian" because she was reading an Ian McEwan book - and am seriously starting to get worried about finding somewhere to live.

well, i'm getting so used to seeing dank and dingy rooms that when i was being shown the bedroom of a sixteenth century 'haunted' castle the other day, complete with thick cobwebs and dust you could choke on, i nearly shrieked "i'll take it!" to the guide.

Everyone think good thoughts: I have an appointment to see a place tonight, and I really hope it works. And doesn't have the tang of catpiss in it.

Oh, bugger it. If it does, I'll probably still take it. If I'm offered it. Finsbury Park, here I come?

I'm probably going to be moving over middle to late summer this year, any suggestions on some good zone two/three areas? North or South are good.

Yes, the last one fell through - bugger! So here's hoping we're both lucky....
