I've decided to write a small free style poem for every card in the major arcana by Friday. I'll probably go to kinko's and get them bound into a little book and give it to my girlfriend for Valentine's Day. Suggestions, criticism, and help will all be appreciated.

The Magician

Oh, what a cruel, selfish bastard I am
To have taken such a lovely spirit,
And through some slight of hand,
Fastened her to the street.
A whispered prayer to some abstract god
Cast a spell around her body
And brought the ground rushing up to her feet.

I don't apologize for my cunning
Or my casual use of arcane alchemy.
Cause the spirit proved much to powerful
For my dull penetration and poor spelling.
She took my wand and aptly
Transformed me into her underling.

The Chariot

It’s 5 o’clock in the morning
And the little blue civic,
Winding this way
And that,
Performs intricate maneuvers
Through the asphalt night.
Beams of light cut through
The thick humid fog.
I say the little blue civic
Because I’m not steering.
I’ve left myself in your warm, red bed
I’m still sleeping with you,
While my faithful little car
Carries my carcass
home.

Strength

I pulled out a fortune card
Out of simple curiosity
I expected the cliched Lovers
When instead,
I got a pearly clad beauty
Dropkicking a monstrosity.
I meditated as I flipped and played with the card
Between my fingers
And smiled at the divinatory fight
Among the two figures
This, a symbol of our relationship
Emblazoned on thin cardboard.
I give you patience
While you make me strong.

Magicians use sleight of hand, not "slight." Unless, y'know, that was a pun, for effect.

And actually, I notice that in a later line in the same poem, you reference your own "poor spelling."

Hmm.

Now I can't decide if the sleight/slight confusion is clever, or just careless. Nice one.

honestly it was a mistake but if anyone else asks I'll say it was a cleverly placed pun.

The High Priestess

If you’ll be my Priestess
I'll be your altar boy.
I'll light candles and
Get on my knees
And worship in tongues
On a quiet Tuesday night
Until your cup overflows
And stains your couch
With the sweet taste
Of sacrament.

The Moon

The moon was full when you nervously
Told me you loved me. It's pull, so great,
That my blood sloshed back and forth
Like the tides. I rhythmically went white and blushed.
As I told you I loved you back.

The moon was full as we laid in the sand
On the beach. My fingers danced on your body
To the beat of waves against the shore.
That night, you told me secrets and my heart tore.

The moon was full as we peeled our
Clothes off and slipped into bed.
The flickering candles gave your body a lunar glow.
One more mystery was revealed that night
I dived into you and you swallowed me whole.

Great poems- good luck finishing by Friday! Will you present them as a deck?
The Empress is an excuse for girlfriend flattery if ever there was one... likewise the Star and World. What help can we offer?

Well, I've never written poetry before so help in the way of advice is always good. Also, like you mentioned, Friday is right around the corner so ideas for poems would be great. Especially harder cards like Death, Wheel of Fortune, Judgment.

Yeah, I've got a great idea for poem 22 The World I met her when I was 22.

The Fool

Some people my say I'm vain.
An impulsive little lick-slut
Careening towards a cosmic cliff
Entertaining any pretty girl along the way
Star-crossed eyes fixed steadily
Upon the magick mirror of their eyes
Seeing only my reflection
I didn't notice the chasm in my path
Until I fell.
It was horrible really
Blood, guts, broken bits of mirror.
The chasm wasn't very wide
As a matter of fact, she was rather petite.
But she was deep
And I fell hard.

The Devil

Did you ever think you'd be seduced
By a devil?
A charming, beautiful, humble devil
Who laughs at your morality,
A sexy sinister laugh,
And places his freezing palm on your soft
Warm belly on a cold night
Just to see you squirm?
One who flicks his forked, platinum tongue
Against the sensitive spot
In the back of your neck
To make you shudder?
Did you ever think you'd be so happy
With a devil like me?

I finished them! 22 poems in 4 days. Towards the end they started getting rather sort (epic haikus) but she loved them.
