Boring database query

Sorry about this, but it's either you lot or ask my dad, and he'll only suggest some super-complex linux thing which won't work on my orrible windows PC.

Can anyone suggest a good, free database program which will allow me to construct & customise my own databases, and preferably cross-reference them over to each other? I have some very dull prosographical work to do, and I can't face doing it all in Excel - but I don't have Access and the college computer room, which might, is too cold for me to spend all night in there. Chiz moan drone. All suggestions greatly appreciated...

Firebird is an open-source DB. Might take a bit of fiddling.

Have you thought of getting excel templates?

And wasn't Access on the Office discs you have?

There's a range of stuff on download.com - not that I would ever advise working around copy protection. Heavens no.

I would patch your machine before messing around with them, also.

This place (you might have to register) offers shareware DB programs for Excel, which might be an easier solution.

I don't think I have Office, only Windoze... really the only thing which is crucial is that it must cost no money as I am broker than broke. Will check out this firebird thingy - thanks very much indeed, old chap.

MySQL is good, free under GNU public license (basically don't make money from it or you have to pay them) and should do all the fancy stuff you need. Also as it's an open source project there are many tutorials and other helpful sites around.
