If I'm not mistaken, the advantages of .pdfs are these:
* Acrobat Reader, the software for reading .pdfs, is pretty universal. Usually when you post .pdfs, you also post a link to the free Acrobat Reader download. Conversely, not everyone can always open .tifs. Actually, I can't even open .jpgs for printing on my work computer.
* Also .pdfs can be multiple pages --i.e., like books.
It's pretty much a snap to output to .pdf from a page layout program like InDesign. Husb also says that individual .tifs or .jpgs --which I assume is how comics are done-- can be put together in .pdf format. And actually this is what I have from dlotemp, so you can see how it looks --should have that up by the end of the week.
I think that people would print .pdfs. I would print them, certainly; I'm obsessive like that. Seriously, the thing about .pdfs *is* that they're printable. Just one click, and you have the whole thing in your hands. Whereas I wouldn't necessarily go to the trouble of downloading and then printing, say, eight separate .jpgs. Although I don't think there's anything really undesirable about people reading the .pdfs online...
Another thing that .pdfs would be good for is extras like Flyboy's and Sax's Shifter scripts.
But also there's still going to be people who put together their zines by hand, and I'd like QG to stay open to them too! |
