JTHM
This is my favourite comic for twisted grownups. I love Morrison, Gaiman et al but for me Johnen Vasquez is among the best graphic artists and writers around. Yes, he's pretty dark, and undeniably Goth, but nothing else has me crying with laughter like this comic. Really. Check it out. What's not on that site is Invader Zim, the animated cartoon by Johnen, for KIDS no less, shown on Nickleodeon early in the mornings- I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it. HEALTH WARNING: Zim has been known to lead to obsession, in-jokes and DOOOM for puny earth babies. Zim!

I love Squee, and his poor disturbing life. One day I'll have to shell out the money for his mini-series. Has anyone read it?

I love squee - and the trade is great - half squee stories and half miscelanious 'meanwhile' stories.

It's great stuff. Very slick. Loved 'I feel sick'. Can't believe they've let him loose on TV!?!?!

Alas, his foray into television was short but good. As far as I know, there aren't plans to make any more Invader Zim episodes and Nickelodeon has been editing bits out of some of the older ones.

I like aspects of his work, but his lettering is nearly illegible to me. I don't know if it's the age difference or that he just can't letter, but it makes his stories so hard to read, I have never made it through the graphic novel. His TV work is VERY funny, but the comics just give me too much of a headache.

Get Squee. It is easily as good as Johnny. Any votes on Jhonen's funniest creation? For me it just has to be GIR... "I'm gonna sing the Doom song now! Doom, doo-doo-doo-doom, doodoodooDOOOM.."

Actually i think the lettering is another GOOD thing about Vasquez's work - its expressive and speaks volumes of the turmoil angst and stress that Johnny feels exaggerated to the extreme for comic effect. much better for the lettering to reinforce the strip than to detract from it in the way that most default setting lettering does.

I will agree that the lettering matches the art style, but I just have trouble with it. I think if it was a bit more legible, the scratchiness would work better.

And yes, GIR is one of the funniest creations in any cartoon show. I STILL laugh myself sick hearing some of his odd lines. "But where woudl I put the TUNA?" I actually didn't care for his work at all until I saw Invader Zim and it clicked for me. Wonder if he'll still work in comics now that he got the big TV money...

Bun Edlund has only done a mildly successful animated show and a flop series and we'll never see him do another comic.

Apparently Vasquez is working on a 4-issue comic series called Saturday Morning Nightmare at the moment. Rumours to the effect that he might be doing a new series of JTHM were responded to in this (News item - 2.16.02 11:50pm - News from Jhonen) fashion:

'I am NOT working on JTHM right now. People who want to see me doing only Johnny for the rest of my life can go choke on their own lack of variety and die politely. I've had ideas for Johnny stuff for awhile, but these are floating in a miasma of other, quite pushy ideas in my head. Don't fear the unknown, poops.'

And in full-on, pathetic, bragging mode, my Squee t-shirt is both the most highly coveted item of apparel by geeks and nerds across Hampshire, and a terrifyingly accurate external depiction of my inner self. Fear my inner goo.

Are you sure? I know somebody in Hants with a GIR sweater who might disagree....

Anyone read "I Feel Sick"? It was a full-colour 2-issue mini from a while back, starring the girl that Nny tried to kill when they were on a date, but didn't. Can't remember her name right now. WOrked in a bookstore. Nny has a small cameo in a flashback in issue 2. Thought it was a fookin' treat, that book. Introduced me to Spooky, The Thing What Squeaks, and now I have my own Spooky hangin' on me wall.

What about this new Vasquez thing - the collaborative kids book? Called TOT, or something... anyone read that?

Everything can be beaten came out a couple of months ago - fun enough - but like the filler bunny one shots a little insubstantial for my money - i'd prefer to get more pages even if i have to pay more money to get 'em

Was wondering when the Filler Bunny one-shot's would be mentioned, actually some of my favourite stuff he'd done. He sort of distilled his essence and splattered it over the page . They make great birthday presents, it's a good way to share the phrase 'anal meat' with friends.
The Squee story with the anti-christ is still my favourite though.

You're Squee! Your parents hate you. Your onlyfriend is a teddy bear.
What Johnny the Homicidal Maniac character are you?
