"ALEISTER CROWLEY
"Before Hitler was, I am."
-- Aleister Crowley
Edward Alexander Crowley was born on October 12th, 1875 in Warwickshire, England into a wealthy and religious family at the height of the Victorian era. The young Crowley was raised in a strict Christian home - his father Edward was a preacher in a sect known as the Plymouth Brethren, and Edward was only allowed to read the Bible at home when he was a child.
But he despised and rebelled against his family at every turn, even renaming himself 'Aleister' to avoid sharing the same first name as his father, who passed away in 1887. Aleister lost his virginity a few yars later at age 14 with the help of a maid, and at 17 he contracted gonorrhea with the help of a street walker.
Crowley went on to attend Cambridge University, and lived in the manner of the privileged aristocracy while having a great deal of sex with both men and women. He also began working in the Diplomatic Service, and was competent in his knowledge of English, French and German, but Crowley wished to make a greater imprint on the world.
He began searching for more lasting pursuits and in 1898, at age 23, Crowley began his path of magical enlightenment by joining The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Led by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, other members of the Golden Dawn included notables such as William Butler Yeats, Maud Gonne, Constance Wilde, (the wife of Oscar Wilde), Arthur Machen, Moina Bergson, Arthur Edward Waite, Florence Farr, Algernon Blackwood, Sax Rohmer and Bram Stoker. Mathers' authority was held in part by his link to the gods, the true leaders of the Order, with whom only Mathers could communicate with through metaphysical means.
These ancient, highly intelligent beings worked in concert with certain human adepts - individuals with highly developed occult powers. The truly initiated could, by means of magic-mystical rituals, establish contact with them and learn secret arts unknown to the rest of humanity. The Golden Dawn had adapted the system of magic outlined by occultist Eliphas Levi, and traced its spiritual ancestry to the Rosicrucian Brotherhood and, from there, through the Kabbalah to ancient Egypt. Its contribution to the Western magical tradition would be a synthesis of the Kabbalah, alchemy, tarot, astrology, divination, numerology, Masonic symbolism, and ritual magic into one coherent and logical system which led them to influence countless occult organizations to come.
Crowley advanced quickly through the ranks of the Golden Dawn, but unfortunately he managed to severely fragment the order through sheer force of personality. As with any serious dispute between magicians, astral attacks ensued, but in the end it was the police who resolved the matter. The result was that The Golden Dawn was destroyed and several fractions arose from its ashes.
Tired of all the fighting, Crowley then chose to travel the world, visiting Mexico, India, France, and Ceylon where he studied Buddhism, yoga and meditation. On returning to England, Crowley purchased a house near Loch Ness known as Boleskine House, and married the clairvoyant Rose Kelly. Travelling with her to Egypt in March 1904, Crowley had the most important experience of his life.
In Cairo, after invoking the ancient Egyptian god Horus, Crowley encountered a being known as Aiwass, and for three days he took dictation from the entity. (Crowley later identified Aiwass as the dark Elder God worshipped by the Sumerians as Shaitan and by the Egyptians as Set.) The resulting text, Liber AL vel Legis, became what is now known as The Book of the Law. This book was to become the central core of Crowley's philosophy, and Crowley was named the Prophet of a New Aeon which would end the Age of Osiris and usher in the Age of Horus - a signal that a new era had begun for mankind, and that the old faiths were to be swept aside.
After the encounter with Aiwass, Mathers received a message announcing that the Equinox of the Gods had come, and that Crowley had forged a new link with the Ascended Masters, thus making him the supreme magical authority. This naturally resulted in a magical duel, which Crowley eventually won. Crowley soon learned that among his past lives he was the reincarnation of Eliphas Levi, who had died the same year that Crowley was born.
In 1907, Crowley formed the Argenteum Astrum, the Order of the Silver Star, a magical organization centered around The Book of the Law, and several years later, in 1910, he was contacted by the head of a secret Berlin lodge known as the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO). Crowley joined the order shortly thereafter, and in 1912, became the head of the English speaking branch of the OTO.
Crowley welcomed the Great War as necessary to sweep away the old age and usher in the new one. Crowley was not only an occultist, but also a double-agent and a skilled practitioner of counter-espionage. He waited out the Great War in the United States and correspondend with an acquaintance in the British Intelligence Department, saying that he was "in a position to get into the full confidence of the Germans." Crowley maintained that he "had the absolute confidence, years old, of a man high in the German secret service," and that he "could go to Germany" under an assumed identity and "report on the conditions of the country" as a spy for Britain. But he also wrote disturbing anti-British stories for The Fatherland, a pro-German weekly paper published in America by George Sylvester Viereck.
During this time Crowley began collecting a large number of photographs, full face and profile for each subject, and classifying them according to the horoscope in search of a double or look-alike to transform into his avatar. Thousands of photographs of German soldiers were classified and studied, but Crowley also needed a double with a clean police and service record - perhaps even a soldier noted for courage on the battlefield. He also needed someone single, an unknown loner living far enough away from any family members or friends who might otherwise notice the transformation. But most important, he needed someone who was still morally innocent: a virgin. This "Magic Child" would forfeit his own identity and, if Crowley had his way, even his soul.
Crowley simply vanished in the summer of 1918 and did not turn up in England again until the next year. During the missing weeks that marked the end of the Great War, Crowley located his Magic Child in Pasewalk Military Hospital in northern Germany. In 1918, about two months after winning the Iron Cross, Adolf Hitler was blinded by mustard gas during a battle on the front lines and taken to Pasewalk. Suffering from hysteria and mustard gas blisters, Hitler's face was bandaged with gauze and he remained in a state of enforced trance for several days.
Dr. Edmund Forster, chief of the Berlin University Nerve Clinic, treated Hitler at Pasewalk and prepared him for magical initiation with hypnosis and drugs (including narcotics and methamphetamines). Dr. Forster told his patient "I am a simple doctor. But perhaps you yourself have the rare power, which occurs only occasionally in a thousand years, to work a miracle. Jesus did it. Mohammed. The saints... An ordinary person with such a condition would be blind for life. But for a person of particular strength and will and spiritual energy, there are no limits... You have to have a blind faith in yourself, then you will stop being blind... You know that Germany needs people who have energy and blind self-confidence. Austria is at an end, but not Germany."
Crowley's disciples then staged a secret rite which involved ritual sex magic, and the Magic Child was conceived: after Germany's surrender on November 11, 1918, Hitler claimed that he had experienced "a supernatural vision ... a miracle came to pass" and he could see again. But when the bandages were removed, Hitler only slightly resembled his earlier self. He was a changed man, with almost no recollection of his past, who had extreme difficulty recognizing his close friends and remembering old acquaintances. Hitler wore dark glasses during the first period of recovery from his chemical blindness, but his nose, forehead, and chin were permanently altered - supposedly from inflammations caused by exposure to mustard gas.
Literally overnight, Hitler discovered his unusual powers of suggestion, and debated with dogmatic opinions about history, politics, philosophy, and other things that had never crossed his mind before. The uneducated corporal who had never had a girlfriend emerged from a few weeks in hospital as a seasoned diplomatic leader who would shamelessly seduce his own niece.
In 1920, Crowley set up the notorious Abbey of Thelema in Sicily, where he performed black magic rituals and other scandalous acts during the same time as the rise of the fascist Mussolini regime. (Thelema is Greek for "The Will" - Crowley used the word to represent his most important concept, the statement "Do As Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law".) Crowley's ultimate goal was "The Babylon Working", a ceremony which would create a new interdimensional gate between the stars.
Crowley's student Dietrich Eckart would become an important mentor for Hitler during this time. Eckart was the wealthy publisher and editor-in-chief of the anti-Semitic journal Auf Gut Deutsch. He was also a committed occultist and a master of magic who belonged to the inner circle of the Thule Society as well as other esoteric orders. Eckart used his master's ritual magic to prepare Hitler for his occultic destiny of ruling the Aryan race and ultimately the world.
Having done his worst, Eckart died in 1923, but only after proudly advising those around him: "Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the 'Secret Doctrine', opened his centers of vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not mourn for me: I shall have influenced history more than any other German."
From then on Crowley himself influenced Hitler's thinking and beliefs directly. Hitler was already familiar with his writing and theories through the Thule Society, and The Book of the Law, oriented toward various fascist principles, became Hitler's guide. Very often he would paraphrase or express an idea from the book - often word for word.
Armed with new, secret psychological techniques Hitler was able to move the obscure National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) from the clubs and beer halls to a mass movement, while in 1925 Crowley was elected World Head of the OTO.
Between 1936 and 1939 Crowley paid a number of visits to Nazi Germany while Heinrich Himmler's Occult Corps (Geheim-Korps) recruited or persecuted all practicing occultists in Germany and incorporated into one organization the Thule Society, the Vril Society and the German branch of the OTO. The SS Paranormal Division's subsequent vilification of Crowley during World War II was a simple cover; behind the political facades performed for the public the most powerful factions (occult and economic) of Germany and Britain were not enemies but allies, bound together in the one great war for the conquest of men’s souls and minds.
Himmler viewed the relationship between Crowley and Hitler like that once shared by Merlin and Arthur: the one magician, adviser and the architect of Camelot, the other true-born king, and each equally benefitting from the favors of the other. But Marianna Blavatsky, high priestess of the Occult Corps, claimed the relationship was more like that once shared by Rasputin and the Romanovs of Russia, and that it was Crowley who ruled the Third Reich..."
