Bug chasing

This has got to be the most bizarre, sad and weird thing I've read for a while. I hope this is just a journalist making shit up. I took this off the excellent www.norlonto.net where they ask the question "is the world turning into a William Gibson novel?"

Yeah. And then some.

An extract:
Carlos is part of an intricate underground world that has sprouted, driven almost completely by the Internet, in which men who want to be infected with HIV get together with those who are willing to infect them. The men who want the virus are called "bug chasers," and the men who freely give the virus to them are called "gift givers." While the rest of the world fights the AIDS epidemic and most people fear HIV infection, this subculture celebrates the virus and eroticizes it. HIV-infected semen is treated like liquid gold.

Any reactions? Homophobic scare-mongering? Another one of those internet stories with no basis in reality? If there is a grain of truth in it, what does it say about the subculture it's from? What does it say taboos and the breaching thereof?

The Rolling Stone piece has already been pretty throughly discredited. Are there a few sick sex-and-death obsessed fuckheads out there? Undoubtedly: but one deeply disturbed interviewee and some dodgy numbers do not a sociosexual movement make.

They do, however, provide all the rationale that the lad-mag readers who now constitute Rolling Stone's subscriber base need to justify their inherent fear of gays. Well done.

Cheers for the link Jack. I wondered...
