I've Got a Secret

So I'm feeling like a very clever fellow, because, after much searching, I've found clean MP3s of ten particular songs and ripped them to a CD. Being as I am in a playful mood, I'm leaving it to you to discover why these ten songs are significant.

I'll give you the artists:

Sparks
Kraftwerk
soundtrack to the Disney cartoon The Jungle Book
Bob Dylan with The Band
Billie Holiday
The Doors
Iggy Pop
John Cale
Roxy Music
Television

Now, with only that information, you should be able to tell me what the song titles are and why they are together in this order.

And if you've got a musical secret, give us a go at it...

I'm thinking something to do with "You" but I'm not sure.

I wanna be like you (Jungle Book)

I wanna be your dog (Iggy Pop)

Hmmm. The only Sparks songs that come to mind are "Eaten by the Monster of Love" and "(I Wanna Go To) Cool Places."

Wanna? Not enough of a secret. Maybe something conversational?

Jack Fear

Not even close.

A small hint: it's got nothing to do with the titles, but with the songs themselves: and I reiterate, the order is important.

With grant's "yous"

"You ain't goin' nowhere?" by Bob dylan and the Band?

I think you might have to give us one as a starter....

Jack Fear
14:09 / 30.01.03
See, if I give you even one title, I give you the key to unlock the whole puzzle...

Okay. The Sparks song is "This Town Ain't Big enough For The Both Of Us."

Jack Fear
14:12 / 30.01.03
(And the payoff to all this is really pretty obscure, and kind of pathetic. But it makes me feel clever and hip. Allow me that.)

The Natural Way

Don't be a ponce, Fear. Sort it out.

Jack Fear
14:34 / 30.01.03
That would be telling.

The search function here might be useful, though.

Saveloy

If it's in the music rather than the lyrics or titles, then is it something like they all sound alike, or each one sounds a bit like the last? Or is it cleverer than that? I hope it's not some muso thing to do with keys and flanges and musical boomatics, Jack.

My other guess was going to be that you had some narrative thing going on, like the Kraftwerk track would be Autobahn, cos, erm, the town wasn't big enough, so someone had to leave. Up the Autobahn.

Spatula Clarke
15:06 / 30.01.03
It's a narrative. I'm pretty sure that I've got a couple of them.

Jack Fear
15:06 / 30.01.03
Nope. It's not the lyrics, it's not the music, it's the songs.

Next hint: he Television tune is "Little Johnny Jewel."

Spatula Clarke
15:17 / 30.01.03
Oh, balls. So it's not

Metropolis
My Own Home
Most Likely You Go Your Way And I’ll Go Mine
Solitude

then?

Jack Fear
15:19 / 30.01.03
Heh heh heh.

No.

The Dylan/Band song is "This Wheel's On Fire."

Saveloy
15:35 / 30.01.03
"Nope. It's not the lyrics, it's not the music, it's the songs."

You massive wanker. Okay - sound effects?

Jack Fear
15:37 / 30.01.03
No.

It's.

The.

Songs.

These songs. In this order. Is significant.

The Doors are doing "You're Lost Little Girl."

Saveloy

Gah, sorry Jack, I just can't get my brain around the idea that a song is something other than words and music. You're coming across like some mystic here - "don't listen to the sounds, smell them..." Am I being fick again?

Jack Fear
15:55 / 30.01.03
John Cale records a song called "Gun," but the song has an existence outside of John Cale's recording of it.

Saveloy
16:06 / 30.01.03
You mean things like when and where produced, or chart positions, or jinxes associated with the songs, or appearances on telly etc - stuff like that?

deja_vroom
16:20 / 30.01.03
He's saying you should try *listening* to those songs...

Jack Fear
16:46 / 30.01.03
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha no.

I'm running up against my posting limit for the day, so you'll have to figure it out on your own.

Make the leap.

Use the search function at All Music.

Look for commonalities. Look for patterns.

The Roxy Music song is "Sea Breezes."

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha not interested.

Ethan Hawke

For some reason I'm thinking "absolutely fabulous"

Red Cross Iodized Salt
22:48 / 30.01.03
Souxie and the Banshees covered all the songs?

There's no way I'd have gotten it without the allmusic search, but I kind of had to know after reading the thread.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Damn. I'd just thought "Through the Looking Glass" then realised Basic was there before me.

Saveloy
10:02 / 31.01.03
Cocking Nora! And there's me expecting some fiendish "Round Britain Quiz" type connection. I used to have that flipping album as well. Bah! Give us another one, Jack, or someone.

Jack Fear
12:25 / 31.01.03
Okay.

What is the significance of the instrumental break at the end of the Pogues' "Turkish Song of the Damned"—its significance to the story told in the lyrics, I mean?

Jack Fear
12:27 / 31.01.03
Oh, and many congratulations to Basic, as well: I didn't think that one would be so difficult, honestly.

I'm thinking of calling my compilation CD This Side of the Looking Glass, or something like that.

Jack Fear
13:50 / 31.01.03
A hint on the Pogues tune: the answer is to be found somewhere on this page.
