They Might Be Giants unscrewed the top of my head

"No, not another music and magick thread!" Ah, relax a minute and hear me out.

We all know of the connection between music and magick. The nature of that relationship is certainly debatable, perhaps to infinity, so this thread is about what songs caused you or someone you know to have a transcendental or otherwise mind-bending experience just by hearing it.

My own story begins like so: I was wandering through Border's Books one night, listening to the music on display. Having just smoked half a joint or so, I was feeling pleasantly high and decided to hear some They Might Be Giants, who recently released a box set of sorts. Everything was normal until I got to track 14, "Man it's so loud in here". Then my head melted. I could feel it coming and was powerless to stop it. Something strange was happening in my head. Soon it felt like my ass had caught fire and the flames had spread all the way up my spine to the top of my head, which felt as if it had nearly split open. I became dizzy. My spine was burning. I violently tore the headphones off and stumbled out of the store, no doubt alarming the employees of Border's (who have come to tolerate my continual browsing and occasional thievery because I leave them alone and don't cause any trouble. They call me "creepy quiet guy", which I find amusing).

Seeking a ballast of some sort, I went outside to smoke a ciggarette, which I have found to be calming in these sort of situations. It helped a little, but I was in a bit of a daze all night.

Strange goings-ons at the They Might Be Giants studio, methinks! Or maybe I was just higher than I thought. Either way, it was a strange although not altogether unpleasant experience. For some time afterwards, I would get deja vu even more frequently, and everything looked like I was watching through a video camera. Weird.

Has this ever happened to you? What song did it? What were the after effects? Had you ingested any narcotics previous to your listening to the music?

Have you ever wondered what makes certain frequencies of sound musical when other frequencies of sound are not musical?

7 notes (ABCDEFG), 7 chakras. Yes, each chakra has a corresponding note, but the order is suprising until you know more about how it works.

Johnny. This is the sort of thing I mean when I talk about people going off on tangents. Whatever it was about the song, whether it was the right combination of notes, the right lyrics, whatever, the point is that it was the right thing at the right time and it shot you forwards along your path - call it a 23 or a cosmic 2x4 or an ephiphany or whatever. The trouble is, that now you are trying to work out what happened, and this means that you are now not carrying on forwards along your path. Don't take too long to collect your thoughts, keep going. Life doesn't stop everytime something new happens. If you don't keep going, you could miss the next 23.

Sounds like your kundalini got activated, since the top of your head is where the sahasrara is located. Evy's sahaja yoga link is very informative in learning more about this.

I love THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, although that particular song never evoked any such reaction in me -- just a darn good pop song! Your having smoked a bit of a joint beforehand might have had a hand in the experience, no doubt.
