Not sure if anyone's started a thread on this yet, but the long-anticipated addition to the Mad Max canon is generating rumours aplenty on the various fan sites. In 'Asia's premier movie magaxine', George Miller apparently comments:
"We're almost done on the script and we hope to get filming early in the year. Yes Mel's back on board (in response to his payment) he's worth every cent... Mel had an idea to put Robert Downey Jr - who I adore by the way - in a role, and I myself would love to see some of the faces from the earlier films return be it Tina Turner, Emil Minty..."
I'm a big fan of the first two films (the third had its moments but was ruined, as ever, by the schmaltzy addition of Hollywood Children), partly because they trussed a young, attractive Mel Gibson up in ridiculously fetishy leather gear and bound him up in a strong homoerotic subtext (at times, it's more text than sub) which still pushes my On button. I also reckon Miller - whether by accident or design - actually touched on some rarely-discussed truths concerning the social undercurrents and motivations of men who band together within the motorcycle subculture...
In any case, the Mad Max films have always been overshadowed by Miller's other stuff and remain something of a cult interest. Which way d'you reckon he'll go with the fourth installment? Will be be able to resist Hollywoodisation and return to the gritty charm of the first two? |
