Tarot and the Virgin Mary

Imported from an associate in another forum. I figure the brains of Barbelith should be able to come up with something

***

I am taking a graduate class in the Iconography of Mary. For my major paper, I have chosen to discuss the comparision of the images of Mary found in iconography and numerous images on various decks of Tarot cards. I need to do in depth explanations of the correlations; i.e. Mary as a fertility image and the image of the empress in the Raider-Waite deck; the High Priestess Card (sometimes called the Papess) (thought to not be the Virgin Mary but possibly legenary Pope Joan or the feminie aspect of the diety) and images of Mary; just to briefly name a couple of themes.

I am planning on utilizing the Universarl Raider-Waite, the Sacred Path, the Visconti, The Golden Deck of the Tsar, the Tarot of the Saints, and the Marsilles decks. I am also focusing mainly on the major arcana.

So, what I am asking is if anyone knows of any GOOD research on this topic, has any helpful, substantiated opinions or thoughts, or can direct me toward a certain artist/author. This is a high level art course, so it must be presented with that perspective in mind.

OK, I'd really balk at any link between the High Priestess and the Virgin Mary, I think. Scary & sexual vs. well, the Virgin Mary. Pure and soothing.

That said, your friend might find some worthwhile imagery looking into the Black Madonna, a common motif in folk Catholicism.

Here's one OK link site.

There might also be some wiggle room with some of the equivalences between the virgin and some of the lwa, who pop up in some tarot decks. That process, syncretism, might be a good model to work off, actually.
Like Erzulie or Oshun to Nuestra Senora del Caridad del Cobre to Our Lady of Charity.

As far as high level research, though, I'm drawing a blank. I'm positive there's reams of stuff on the iconography of Mary, but occult stuff tends not to be peer reviewed. I ran across one good book a while back on the history of the tarot... no idea of title and author, but I remember it was a he, I probably wrote about it here, and he talked a lot about tarrochi, the Renaissance card game today's tarot deck came from. ("The Game of Tarot" maybe? "The History of Tarot"?)

Oh, and this site might be useful: The Thacher Gallery - Bringing the Dark Madonna to Light

Here might be a good start for some tarrochi research - looking up material on the Tarot of Marseilles, for instance.

And follow the links off this page, and you're likely to find lots of information, including names of people who will probably point you towards some good research.
