I’d be interested to know how many – if any – of the people involved were known terrorists or whatever before they were granted asylum, as the papers are using the old ‘after the fact, therefore because of the fact’ approach. If they were granted asylum (funny, when I were a lad, we used the word refugees, but I guess that’s more likely to inspire some measure of human compassion, so we’d better not use that word any more) and only later became involved in violent or anti-social stuff, then blaming the asylum system would seem to be like blaming the NHS for letting Myra Hindley be born.
Remember, the papers don’t care if you live or die. Nor do they really care what they write, as long as they sell. It’s not about truth or integrity, it’s about filling the gaps between the adverts. If it was in any way motivated by public concern, the NoW would have dished out free copies of the sex offenders register the other year, not printed it in their pay-for-this rag. Because they could afford to.
Is it just me, or is it all too easy to imagine that every time something like a child getting murdered happens, the news media actually feel a little thrill, perhaps even a sense of relief that they’ll have something to cover ? Anyone here know anyone who works in this area ? I’d be interested to know. I’m not saying that they’re praying for disaster, but they do seem to revel in it, like the old Steve Bell cartoons of Thatcher the ghoul hanging round hospitals after accidents.
