The late night threads seem to get a fair bit of attention and I was wondering if a Barbelith chatroom might go down well. The conversations on those threads does seem to be somewhat akin to mutual delousing. In a good way.

BTW - looking over old threads I did notice a delphi chatroom that doesn't seem to work.

There's always the Habbo Hotel room.

It'd need to be a through-firewall chatroom. Maybe one of those java things that uses an IRC server? I remember having shitloads of trouble on Habbo, too...

Same here. Got bumped/booted off v. often. Didn't like me having messenger open either.

No wonder I never saw any of you in the Barbelith Lounge. I went off it quickly.

This question of BarbeLive has come up several times in my short time here, remains unresolved, sinks, rises again. I'd be interested to see it break the surface. See if it'll float.

I've not encountered any chat applets that reliable work over firewalls. HTML-based chat works fine, but it sucks.

I'd prefer just a regular IRC channel to be honest, something like having a channel #barbelith on Undernet or somewhere reliable. IRC is pretty easy to use even if you've never done so before, and it's accessible from practically any system.

Oh, another vote for IRC. Simple, easy to police, easy to use, and you can run a bare terminal window with BitchX and thus look more productive than gooey icky MSNM windows everywhere.

Vote number three for IRC (see what I did there)! It's reliable and when you're bored you can play silly little quiz games and I want to be an op plus I can get this funky little Russian Roulette game that a friend of mine made, if his email still works, and it probably won't and I can't use IRC in Cardiff anyway so why am I even joining in this damn- too- late conversation.

The delphi one seems fine to me, can someone else hop on for a second? I'm getting lonely and scared...

Sorry Bearman.

I'd like to get into a chatty thing but it would need to be accessible from an internet cafe without too much hassle. This is by no means a demand but just a consideration if it is possible.

Well it works fine for me and really that's all that matters isn't it? Anna is in now but not talking, hmm maybe it's not Anna at all!

Tryphena Absent

No, it is me and I'm on the university computers so it can't be that awkward to use!

Ariadne

I'm in there too, with a silly name. There are millions of Ariadnes out there, it seems.

I had to leave, that was all too much for me!

So much for my chat-charm.

So everyone can get into the chatroom except me? Thats great. I didn't want to talk to you guys anyway, so I'm glad that my persistent attempts to log on have failed.

I hate you all.

Bizarrely, I seem to be able to get into it at work. It must be because I'm using IE at work.

I still support IRC though, on the basis that even though I do very little work, I'm still more likely to want to chat at home.

I have now managed to get on to a deserted chat room. Not sure what the problem was, really, but persistence worked in the end.

The next question is if any computer literate person actually going to go to the effort to set up an IRC room?

w1rebaby
18:29 / 20.01.03
It's no effort. All you do is go onto whatever server you're going onto, and type /join #barbelith (or whatever). If you're the first one there, it will start up the channel for you.

I suggested Undernet, but anything would do, really.

Crappity crapcakes.

I keep getting that friggin' server down message, for like an hour now. I'm going back to writing letters. This computer shite is too frustrating.

Ariadne
09:36 / 21.01.03
Bear and I are cavorting round the room - it's fun! Dunno why you can't get in. Maybe your company blocks things?

Ariadne
09:37 / 21.01.03
that sounds ruder than I meant it to - apologies, bear! bear and I are chatting quietly

Our Lady of The Two Towers

Does it take much effort to set up a bot to keep a room open permanently? Is that when the dread word 'charges' come into it?

Loomis
09:42 / 21.01.03
Maybe you should talk more loudly so I can find you. I doubt work is blocking it since I can get to all the previous stuff, or maybe not. Who knows? I'm going back to carving in stone. Much more reliable.

Pah! Crappy old NHS computer refusing to contemplate anything as frighteningly shiny as online chat...

Loomis
09:47 / 21.01.03
We don't need them Ganesh. We're having much more fun here right?

Right?

**tumbleweeds and so forth**

Ganesh

Yeah! We can have our own chatroom right here in the barn!

*distant bell tolls mournfully*

Loomis
09:53 / 21.01.03
And I don't require the "privacy" of a chat room. Anything you want to say to me you can say in front of Zeke.

Ariadne
09:54 / 21.01.03
Well, given that I'm sitting mournfully all by myself in there now, i think you *are* having a better time in here. It's lonely being an early-adopter.

Loomis

Change never got nobody nowhere. If there's one thing to be learned from evolution, it's that the species which adapt are the first to go. Or summat.

The Return Of Rothkoid

I'm in here, too.

But naebody else is.

Bastards.

If you connect, set a username and type '/join #barbelith' (withoug the ' marks) and come say hello.

Smoothly

I think this is a good idea, but on behalf of all chat-room novices, could there be some idiot-proof instructions on how to meet you? Or a link for getting from here to there?
