ANTI-WAR MOBILISATION

With the clock ticking on a possible war with Iraq, those opposed to an attack have mobilised with a new sense of urgency.

Saturday in the United States, Britain, Japan, France, Syria, Russia, Italy, Yemen, Ireland, Cyprus and Pakistan took to the streets to say "no" to war.

"There's been too much capital invested in this war for it not to happen. But we're making our position clear, we're saying 'no'. There are people speaking out on this all over the world now, and we're part of it," said Adam Conway, 24, an activist living at a peace camp near Shannon Airport in Ireland.

War One – US vs. The World

There is growing global resentment concerning Americas policy of intervention in global affairs. The US is acting like a self appointed police force of global significance. The 911 attacks were a direct result of this attitude and the Americans only seem to have hardened their approach to this issue rather than looking at other possible approaches. It is clear that Bush is only popular in this arena and therefore has milked it for all its worth. Combined with his big business sympathies this makes it impossible for him to divert form this automated course that will inevitably lead to a the first world war of this century.

The Arab states have been allied because of his statements. The Saudis the Palestinians, the Iraqis and Iranians are all united by his wholesale condemnation of their leaders and regimes. It is dictatorial to assume that America has the only successful method of government and economic satisfaction. It is also provocative for the Americans to assume the pose of ‘better’ than the rest of the world. Their dominance is in someway, a geographical aberrance as they were never attacked on the homeland in any of the major wars, which most other nations were retarded as a result of.

The rhetoric used by Rice ,Rumsfeld and Bush is indistinguishable from the slogans used by the Nazis. The political use of fear of foreign powers, the branding of other world leaders as enemies and threatening to replace them, while instituting a ‘democratically acceptable alternative’ is all extremely provocative. The master race in this context purported to be the Americans. The fascist ideology of the Third Reich is substituted by commercial liberalization and democracy. The Gestapo replaced by the CIA. Any form of extreme nationalism leads to war and this case is no exception.

The thought that the US would in have any idea what would be practical in the Middle East is farcical. Look at their attempts with Israel and Afghanistan. Israel has never been so war torn and Afghanistan has been plunged back into militaristic feudalism, and for what? The pretext of catching Osama is frankly heinous. It was clearly just a flexing of muscle by America, a precursor to this path to global domination, which is now being pursued relentlessly.

The reaction to this global arrogance will be far worse than 911. Those events gave pause for reflection as to why anyone would want to commit such an unthinkable crime, but instead all those people died in vain, because the very root cause of this action has been ignored and in fact exacerbated.

The UN itself which should be the global voice, has taken opposition against America, and tried to implement weapons inspectors in Iraq. Why is it now that the Americans are insisting this old UN resolution be followed after years of ignoring it. Why is it suddenly calling for Saddam to be ousted. In the context of global domination being pursued by Bush et al currently, it is not possible to let the ’War on Terror’ stop, and it is this autocratic momentum that will bring forth a the War One of this Millennium. Already Iran and Iraq are threatening retaliation on American soil. The vast majority of the thinking public don’t believe this ‘weapons of mass destruction’ charade, any more than they believe it was necessary to obliterate Afghanistan, in the quest for Osama. Robin Cook the ex Foreign Minister of the UK is set to lead an anti Iraq war campaign. This is coupled by France and Russia’s reluctance to jump aboard the war machine. The Arab states are banding together. Even China has links with Iran. Meanwhile poverty and disease are being ignored, providing even greater wholesale contempt for the American position.

If the US do not reverse this trend of global domination through might and economic excess, the way forward looks very dangerous for the rest of humanity and more specifically for the Americans themselves.

The US is acting like Tom Cruise in Minority Report by predetermining who will cause the next ‘terror’ act and beating the shit out of them before they get a chance. It begs the question, when is it ok to attack ?
Unlike the movie, these targets have friends and can retaliate, which puts a whole different spin on it!
