Just finished watching the box sets of this. It's fantastic. Wasn't sure whether or not it would stand the test of time and live up to my very vague but creepy memories of it. But it's actually even stranger than I remember. The fact that this even got made, let alone went out at prime time on ITV is mad. In its own way, I'd say it's even stranger than The Prisoner.

I mean, a future where all animals are extinct but 'pieces' of them have been saved and combined together to make a time machine which eventually rebels against the couple who've used it to travel to the past in order to study the 1980's?

A faceless entity from outside time that managed to break into this world at the moment the first photograph was taken, and now exists in every photo there is waiting for an opportunity to get out?

All irregularities will be dealt with by the forces controlling each dimension? Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life? Medium atomic weights are available?

Have you got a kiss for Johnny Jack? And all the children on his back?

What's not to like?

Yesterday upon the Stair I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today....

Sapphire and Steel, definately shitscary(tm). I saw my first episode on Channel 4's TV Heaven night, along with the Prisoner, it was the one with the old junk shop, the man without a face and small children, I think it was the one with the thing from a photograph.
Baffling in parts, incredibly low budget but oh the plots were pure gold, Time Breaking through and all the rest not to mention the icy cool of Joanna Lumley and Ian David McCallum.

Must borrow the full DVD set at some point.

Wonderful stuff. Was watching the one about the faceless photo-landlord just last night!!! I love the zero-budget spookiness and the new-wave-sci-fi vagueness of it all. Too fucking cool frankly.

"Take time back... take time back..."

"But you've seen my face.... but you've seen my face...."

"You think it's a game... until you look into it..."

Love them all except the one in the Country House, which I think was the only one not written by PJ Hammond ?

Various bits spring to mind – the way the mirror rattles when the Shape’s trapped in it, Steel being attacked by the bird on the roof-edge, the look on the Shape’s face as he burns the photograph… lots of good stuff, and the twists of the story far outweigh the wobbly sets and the like.
I like the other characters too, especially Silver - his semi-flirtatious relationship with Sapphire’s nicely played, and the moment when the door handle becomes a lightbulb is subtly done.
And I like the final adventure a lot – it starts off a bit too reminiscent of the train station one for my money, but then suddenly becomes a lot broader, hinting at a larger mythology to things. And the end… classy.

I understand both stars have said they’d be willing to do more if the chance came up, and that made me wonder : what’s Hammond doing these days ? Anyone know ?

There’s a novel of the first adventure available (also by him), which often turns up in boot sales and charity shops - worth looking out for. There was an annual as well, in addition to the Look-In strips (drawn by Arthur Ranson – and when Lumley said she was willing to sit for him, the editor of Look-In said ‘nah, it’s all right,’ which Arthur rolled his eyes about when he found out, understandably enough), but I don’t think they’re ‘part of the canon’, as it were – though if you’re interested, the text stories from the annual are online somewhere (and aren’t that good, if memory serves).

Good news about the novel - will keep my eyes peeled. Interesting that they'd both be up for doing something new - it'll never happen though will it? Arse. I seem to remember someone was designing a game based on the train station / ghosts / shadow episodes?

"Can we hurt them?!"

Well I bought both DVD's a week ago and am on the second story. I'm still amazed just how good this show is. The fact that the show is written and shot to cover the fact the budget is £3.50 and pulls it off is amazing.
I'm also loving the way every time I start thinking there repeating themselves, they scare the crap out of me for my lack of faith.
I'm trying to fight the urge to buy Dr Who DVD's.

I just finished set one in the States. The whole time travel using vivisected animals is unreal and the idea to not let the audience in on the whole story is a unique twist narrative-wise. Incredible stuff, and to my knowledge never seen over here. I took a huge risk in ordering them solely on praise from the Anorak Zone.

Oh, and incidentally, for Dr Who, stay away from Ressurection of the Daleks and I think you'll do fine. I reccomend Ark in Space, Robots of Death, and Spearhead in Space for sure winners... Tomb of the Cybermen if you like b and w eps.

Steel fed the Dark Tully!
Wow, that's a lot of hate and resentment.
Hope it stays this good.

As far as episode Two (and I gotta say I am sO pleased that all of you guys are watching it at the same time... we should all be considerate with spoilers after watching assignment 6, right?):

Was Tully the anchor for the Dark in this one? At one point Steel and I had an epiphany at the same time and I thought, 'gosh, I've got it now!' then... it wasn't? I got a little lost. And did they really sacrifice Tully as a solution??

Hope it stays this good.

You've got some cracking episodes to come on the second box set, without giving away any spoilers, I think assignments 4 and 6 are my favourites out of the entire series. Not overly keen on Assignment 5 though.

Assignment 1 is very creepy isn't it. 'Upstairs and downstairs! Upstairs and downstairs!' 'Goosey Goosey Gander!!'

I love the fact that so little of it is explained in any way whatsoever.

Assignment 5 is the only one with a different writer.

No, I've never seen the show: all my info come from Google, and this thread. But Jesus, now I want to see it, if only to see McCallum as he desrves to be remembered, not the squash-faced drunkard he became, showing up as the heavy in the occasional US TV movie.

Well I just finished it this afternoon and I have to say it's one of the best thinks I've seen. I had no idea you could make such a weird show and keep it on the air as long.

Oh, your right about 5 being a disappointment, it was an interesting idea, but a murder mystery was never going to compare to the "animal" attacks in 3 or the creepy guy without a face.
"Find every photograph ever taken of you and destroy it." Yet more amazingly creepy stuff.

As for the end, well I could believe they'd do something like that, even so it was harsh watching.

I wish there were more of them.
*sigh*

Was Tully the anchor for the Dark in this one?”
I thought that as well, there was just something about Tully that didn’t seem on the level, but when the screaming started, I figured Steel and just fed the Dark. For 5 years. Until Tully died.
Rough stuff.

The guy who played the ultra-suave Silver was the same guy who played Ginger Bureaucrat for the Revolution Deva in Blake's 7.

True fact. Respect me.

Just finished assignment 5 and am onto the final story.

5 was actually better than I thought and the addition of 'Bronze' was very funny.

Still... I'm glad Hammond wrote the majority of them. The guest writer turned into Murder on the Orient Express!

I hope for your sake that you know about story 6, cause your in for a treat and a half.

I'm having real problems trying to get my friends to watch this, all they see is dodgy Dr Who look to things. Oh well, there loss.
