Love them all except the one in the Country House, which I think was the only one not written by PJ Hammond ?
Various bits spring to mind – the way the mirror rattles when the Shape’s trapped in it, Steel being attacked by the bird on the roof-edge, the look on the Shape’s face as he burns the photograph… lots of good stuff, and the twists of the story far outweigh the wobbly sets and the like.
I like the other characters too, especially Silver - his semi-flirtatious relationship with Sapphire’s nicely played, and the moment when the door handle becomes a lightbulb is subtly done.
And I like the final adventure a lot – it starts off a bit too reminiscent of the train station one for my money, but then suddenly becomes a lot broader, hinting at a larger mythology to things. And the end… classy.
I understand both stars have said they’d be willing to do more if the chance came up, and that made me wonder : what’s Hammond doing these days ? Anyone know ?
There’s a novel of the first adventure available (also by him), which often turns up in boot sales and charity shops - worth looking out for. There was an annual as well, in addition to the Look-In strips (drawn by Arthur Ranson – and when Lumley said she was willing to sit for him, the editor of Look-In said ‘nah, it’s all right,’ which Arthur rolled his eyes about when he found out, understandably enough), but I don’t think they’re ‘part of the canon’, as it were – though if you’re interested, the text stories from the annual are online somewhere (and aren’t that good, if memory serves).
