iIh: "I think we're living in a parallel world"
Me: "Yes, what the fuck is going on? This makes no sense"
oh: "what will you do if conscription happens (no real belief that it ever will)?"
iIh: "Turn around and shoot behind me!"

Apparently, this happened a lot more than the army wants to let on in Vietnam, and may have been a factor in the elimination of the draft.

Also, art lovers might be interested in this -- what you *can't* see behind Colin Powell in the above photograph. It's Picasso's famous anti-war painting Guernica, after being subject to a government "cover-up." Literally. With a blue curtain.

Anna de Logardiere:

I think that the above links (and iIh's sudden change in behaviour) conclusively prove that I am in fact living in a parallel world without any sense, this year is getting increasingly surreal, I don't understand why I get out of bed in the morning.

Feels like it will get much more surreal. Y'know?

From Yahoo news:

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell told a Senate panel Tuesday that what appears to be a new statement from Osama bin Laden shows why the world needs to be concerned about Iraqi ties to terrorism.

Powell said he read a transcript of "what bin Laden — or who we believe to be bin Laden" will be saying on the Al-Jazeera Arab satellite station later Tuesday, "where once again he speaks to the people of Iraq and talks about their struggle and how he is in partnership with Iraq."

But Al-Jazeera chief editor Ibrahim Hilal told The Associated Press his station has no such tape. And Powell, when asked by a reporter to comment on the station's denial, declined to do so.

"Be patient, it's coming," Powell said.

White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, asked about this, said Powell had "summed up what we have heard — accurately. I think this is something that you may hear more about." He said Powell "wouldn't have said what he said if he didn't have a basis for it."

Who is having a crisis of credibility? NATO or the USA?

Well, the joke's on us all: the tape exists and just aired on al-Jazeera.

Ah, hell.

So Osama thinks Iraq should fight against US oppression. Woo. Still, looks mighty bad, don't it.

Just found this thread; anyone got photos of Blix giving statement in front of Guernica? An image I'd love to own, at least in .jpg format.

about that new BinLaden message:
antiwar.com
MSNBC television report this afternoon that their translation of the latest Osama bin Laden tape being read on Al-Jazeera television contains an appeal to the Iraqi people to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

The online story now claims that this was a mistake, that Osama only denounced Saddam as an 'infidel." The original story contained this sentence in the second paragraph:

At the same time, the message also called on Iraqis to rise up and oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who is a secular leader.

This AP story mentions that "he denounced Saddam's secular, socialist al-Baath party as 'infidels.'"

This Reuters story says that bin Laden tells Muslims not to support "the ignorant governments that rule all Arab states, including Iraq," and that he urges support for the Iraqi people rather than the Iraqi goverment.

It appears that, for some reason, the media has made a decision to bury this part of the message.

No English news outlet has yet made a translation available.

Today's UK dailies all cover this... funnily enough, missing out the very part solid state's quote mentions.

Apparently Colin Powell was talking about the content of the tape before al-Jazeera had made it public- anyone got any sources?

Personally, even if he was coming out supporting Hussein, it's still no proof of a link between two guys who (until now) have been known to famously hate each other. I'm inclined to believe that if I was on the verge of war with the States, bin Laden might find it profitable to come out on my side just for the "anti-Great Satan" angle.

Lawsuit Challenges Bush Authority on Iraq

Hee hee. A group of marines, citizens, and politicians are taking the US govt. to court, saying that according to the constitution, Bush et al. have to get a vote from congress to go to war with Iraq, and Congress's giving Bush that power last October was unconstitutional as well.

I can see this not making it in time through the courts, but I wonder if congress would vote for the war anyways...

The Date's Been Set

Colin Powell, the American Secretary of State, suggested that a war against Iraq could be launched within three weeks as he insisted yesterday that it was "time to take action" against Saddam Hussein.

New resolution, 3 week deadline... March 7th-14th the horror begins. I'm losing hope now, but it still must be possible to stop this...

This headline on Yahoo news provokes a great reaction:

"Qaeda reportedly planned Pearl Harbor attack"

It wasn't the Japanese after all!

(ok, so the story was about a new planned attack. But the initial headline....)

Woo! War may be delayed until end of March/early April because of Turkey

Okay, so it's not much to be happy about, but it is something a little positive. If Turkey keeps it up, of course.

Of course, getting Turkey on side blows the whole "it's because of what he did to the Kurds" rationale right out of the water...
