New York Times online, January 16, 2003:
In putting himself on the side of three white students who assert they were denied admission to the undergraduate and law programs in favor of less qualified minority candidates, Mr. Bush moved to the front lines of the nation's debate about affirmative action programs.
The president said that while he believed there should be a way to ensure more minority students in universities, programs like the ones at Michigan "create another wrong and thus perpetuate our divisions."
Such programs, he said, "are divisive, unfair and impossible to square with our Constitution."
Correct me if I am wrong, but can the above statements meant as support for his intervention in university admissions policy be applied directly as evidence against his foreign campaigns, as well?
"create another wrong and thus perpetuate our divisions."
By responding to terrorism with the same activities that inspired it in the first place, does American military action not do this exact thing? "You're either with us, or with the terrorists" sounds incredibly divisive to me...
"are divisive, unfair and impossible to square with our Constitution."
So-called Free Speech Zones hundreds of yards away from Bush rallies where it's OK to have anti-Bush sentiment. Non-representative incarceration of distinct ethnic groups or nationalities. Governmental incursion into private civilian lives. Are these actions described by the above sentiment, as well?
In a sign of the careful political calibration of his words, the president repeatedly used the term "quotas" to describe Michigan's admissions policy, a word that inevitably draws strong opposition in polls.
It is obvious to me (and, I trust, others in America) that the American President is attempting a snow-blind meant to spark righteous indignation in those Americans who are still susceptible to such semantic tripwires. It's a trick we've seen so many times. I can only trust that enough people outside the types of circles that 'Lithers run in appreciate this current piece of deception.
