Have now read the first three trades of Rucka/Brubaker/Lark's Gotham Central. Really hard-nosed, solid crime comics. They manage to get across how batshit freaky it would be for the "normal" folk of Gotham to live in a city where crime sprees are caused by people like the Joker -- and how the dynamic between Batman and the cops would be for people who aren't James Gordon.
Little annoyed by the art -- I've always really like Lark, but he's got a lot of characters to keep track of, and oftentimes his men all look like the same man. Part of the reason that Crispus Allen and Renee Montoya are such captivating characters might be that they're two of the more easily identified, distinctive players.
They managed to make the Mad Hatter terrifying, something that's never quite happened for me before.
Looking forward to scamming the next two trades next week. |
