Turning sand to stone

What with all the recent talk of totem animals and spirit guides, i figured it might be a good idea to find out if i had one. I started meditating, and found my first spiritual arena, a cave. This seemed a little less vivid than it usually does, so i moved out of it, into a forest. This too seemed totally unreal, so i kept on moving. I then found myself in a desert, surrounded by sand-dunes. I got the feeling that this was a good place to stop, so i looked around, but couldn't see anything. All the time that i was looking around, i had it in the back of my mind that there should be a totem animal somewhere for me to find. Anyway, i'm looking around, and i still can't see anything. Then, i feel something behind me, and i turn around. There's an old man standing no more than a few feet from me. He starts talking to me, but without physically talking. I just know what he's saying. He tells me that the reason i've ended up in the desert is that my mind drifts too easily, like the sand in the desert. He tells me that i cannot hope to control all the grains of sand in the desert, that instead I need to alter my mind, until it resembles a single, large rock. This, he tells me, is easy to control.

Now in theory, i understand all of this. The only real problem is, how am i supposed to change my mind from a desert into a boulder?? Has anyone else ever had an experience like this before?? Is it possible that my spirit guide takes the form of a person, rather than an animal??

Any advice/observations/general discussion on this would be greatly appreciated folks.

Hm. One possible translation is to try exercises in focused concentration. Or maybe to work on improving discipline in general?

Well, you were looking for a power animal, a spirit guide, whatever you call it, and you found it. That's unmistakably for me as I see it. Just forget the "shamanic" point for the moment.

I would say yes, focused meditation might add to becoming more of a boulder. But I don't know much about you to tell where to start. I guess you can sort it out for yourself. The metaphor must have hit a string or two within yourself. Just follow it.

'He tells me that i cannot hope to control all the grains of sand in the desert, that instead I need to alter my mind, until it resembles a single, large rock.'

..or a single large hoover.

"In the Abyss of the mind arises the tubulence called I"
- Crowley, Book of Lies, Dust-Devils (not sure which chapter, off-hand).

Some interesting thoughts about the desert as a symbol of the mind in this poem. The only animal Crowley mentions here is the Camel (Gimel) -a very appropriate animal for crossing deserts. See his footsteps V.V.V.V.V.

Anyway, your post made me think of this poem when you mentiond that "my mind drifts too easily, like the sand in the desert". One method would be to turn the sand to stone...Another would be to calm the winds.

Thanks guys. Chris, i see what you're saying, but i'm not sure how that would work. The way i have interpreted this, the sand is my attention, or concentration, and the winds are the distractions i'm faced with. I don't see any way to get rid of these distractions, other than to turn my mind to rock, so i don't lose these grains of concentration. I'm going to keep trying though, and i also thought it might be a good idea to get some more salvia, and try that again. I'll let you know how i get on.

So you have to be one with yourself. And for that you have to turn every grain of sand in the desert (pieces of your personality) into one big boulder...mmhh... I know what I would do, I would become a sandstorm or a hurricane. Just to shake things up a little bit.

The other thing is, I guess, it could just be one of those werido metaphors that you mind throws up - it may not be a specific instuction to meditate for instance, it might mean something else with a looser interprestation. Depends on what feeling you got from the instruction, I guess.
