For our American friends (or anyone else who might know):

Does the state of Alabama still use the electric chair for executions? I'm getting confusing mixed messages from my t'internet research.

The Death Penalty Information Center, which has state-by-state information, says yes. In fact, it's the only method: there's no lethal injection setup at Atmore.

Cool as. I had been on that website but I'd been confused by another one that said they were phasing in lethal injections. Very helpful, JF. Thanks.

Florida (our chair is actually named "Ol' Sparky") recently phased in lethal injection as an alternative.

Way to go, Jeb!

Supplementary question for five extra points:

How many volts do they run through the buggers?

It varies with location but generally there are three jolts: first, 2000 or so volts for five seconds, then a brief pause, then about 1000 volts for eight seconds, then another 1000 for ten seconds. The lower voltage is supposed to prevent the body from burning.

Actual voltage for the first jolt ranges from 1760 to 2500 to seemingly anything in between. I'm not sure if it varies state-by-state, or actually from execution to execution.

But wait! Looks like deathpenaltyinfo.org's info was outdated...

On the of April 26th 2002 the state Governor of Alabama, Don Siegelman, signed a law making lethal injection the primary method of execution there providing that from July 1st 2002 condemned inmates in Alabama will be executed by injection unless they choose the electric chair.

That's from this site, which also reveals that Alabama's electric chair is known as
the "Yellow Momma."
