i am in the process of building a propoganda empire, and would love some ideas.

please post any websites that you like, especially ones from which i may shamelessly steal ideas.

thank you very much.

(i realise this is maybe more of a creation thread, but it will get a better response here and might throw out some interesting conversation...)

Uhhhh... maybe we could narrow this down just a wee bit? What kind of propaganda are you after?

Maybe s/he is trying to promote the Griddle pan over the standard grill. It’s a tough choice, especially when trying to cook a healthy steak!

Griddle pan's easier to clean though, as George Foreman would attest. And he's a man well acquainted with lardy residues.

While I was buying my lamp this evening, I saw, on public sale, a George Foreman bun warmer.

I’ve never really had any problems warming my buns, but I am willing to defer to a higher authority if they can warm my buns faster than I.

I'm sure a goose farmer can point you in the direction of a proper gander.

clarity

well, i'll take that on board.
i am not so interested in the actual propaganda side, more in the basic internet mechanics of running a well oiled site.

y'see, i have all the toys at my disposal, and not a clue how they really work. to try and fix this, i want to look at others work.

the sites i admired and may, at least in part, emulate:

well, duh, www.barbelith.com

www.disinfo.com

www.fortdrastic.com

www.sizemore.co.uk

www.lapsuslinguae.co.uk

and precious few others.
i like the content of others, but i am looking for styles and interfaces that i can dig.

and the george foreman grill is the dogs bollocks.
try it if you havent, and feel its power.

alright.
lets try this again.

i would quite like for anyone who has seen a site that they think is exceptionally well designed to give me the URL sdo i may also feel its power.

more important things than a website have happened in my life since i started this thread, but i am now back to working something out webwise. any ideas greatly appreciated.

also, ignore the previous addresses. most of them have either changed their content since i first posted, or become boring to me.

What's the purpose of the website?

I think design, especially in relation to how the interaction works, changes depending on the intended purpose.
Barbelith, for example, is a message board. It's well categorised, fast loading, and the navigation is transparent. Rock on.

If this were a design-heavy site, or something looking to experiment, it would need a more interesting/challenging/potentially really annoying navigation.

i will not say whether these are "good," or "cleverly designed." i will say, however, that i enjoy them.

when i said barbelith i meant the whole thing, webzine and all.

what i am looking to create is a space where i can exhibit art, writings and potentially music.
if all goes well, i would love to have a board too, but i realise that is unlikely to happen either quickly or because i want it to.

i am trying to get a place i would love to visit, part newsworthy information dissemination, part shit talking, part fun and part business card.

somewhere that i can think of as a publishing house for the strange thoughts i get at times, and also for othe peoples.

So. You're trying to get the denizens of one community to tell you how to make a community that they'd really, really like to post on.

Hmmmm.

"So, Mr Hilton; what you reckon I can put in my hotel that'd be really bitching?"

That doesn't sound like the central intent at all. Even if it were, he hasn't specifically asked Tom Coates.

I only visit badly designed sites.

truth is, the message board thing is older than the lith.

and is not my primary concern.
i want to be able to publish without having to actually Publish, as it were.

and i like the idea of making people laugh/think/think im dead sexy.

also, much as i love you guys, i dont actually enjoy the barbelith mindset all the time. and you would probably hate mine.

nowhere near enough nudes and exploitation, and i also like saying really ill advised stuff.

i get the impression that the denizens of this board are just too clever for me to be in charge of a place they hang out; i'd be constantly feeling stupid and being told where to go.

I spend quite a lot of time on urban75 - most of the design I agree with, a bit I don't, but it's tight. Given that it's a combination of portfolio site, information resource and message board, it sounds like it would be a good thing for you to look at.
