Intro and tattoo question

Greetings all,
I have been lurking for almost two years and I thought I would introduce myself before my question.
My name is Jacob and I live in the U.S. in Wisconsin. I am a professional (Equity) actor. A stage actor, mostly regional theater,so no, you haven't seen me in anything. I found this site through Grant Morrison's site via Disinfo.com.

My question is about tattoos. I am thinking about launching a servitor and using it's sigil in a tattoo. This servitor's purpose would be to aid me in my process and performance as an actor. (my actual statement of intent will be more specific) I have had success with servitors in the past.
Has anyone here used a tattoo in this way? Any thoughts?

I love your handle.

There have been threads on tattoos here previously, including a really interesting one started by (I think) shortfatdyke.

Lemme do the search...

here's the one, but it sprang from another one...
Oh, here's a parallel one, which leads yes! to the original one, here.

The purpose (as you'll be able to tell) isn't the same as yours, and since sigils are kinda supposed to be disposable that might not be the best way for you to go. Better ideas? Check the above links.

Agree with grant that tattoos are rather permanent - you might want to try a test run wth long-lasting surface ink, just to ensure that things are working out the way you want. I've never done sigil tattoos, although I have two veve tats (symbols of one of the voudoun loa) that have worked out quite well. However, they were both "tested" designs and done after several years of consideration.

Another thing to consider with a tattoo is that, if you're using the tat as a physical base for the servitor, it may cause complications down the road if you need to take the servitor off-line.

Just a side note - as an actor, tattoos can be problematic. Have you considered going with a pure white ink version of your sigil? That would have the symbolic effect, while being very discrete.

grant I love the fact that you referenced my handle.Arcane indeed is the knowledge of the oft forgotten "5th Monster Cereal"
Thank you for the reply. I should have mentioned I did come across that thread. I understand the disposable quality of a sigil when you are trying not to let ego influence after charging it. I am talking about developing a servitor along the lines of Phil Hine's method. The tattoo could be both the sigil and the material base for the servitor.
Perhaps I am not using "sigil" in the strictest sense of "Chaos Sigil Magick". (strict chaos?)
I would love to hear from anyone who has a tattoo that has magickal significance. (I guess you could argue all tattoos fall under this catagory.)

Hi betty woo
I have planned on doing a henna tattoo first.Good thought about having to take servitor off-line.
Yes body modification is tricky for actors but many of us have them in discreet areas or small enough to cover with a little make-up.
I'll have lots fun experimenting with temporary tattoos as my next role is a pirate.

Think of something that represents acting... that represents the actor being taken over by the paper, under control. There are some people here that are alot better with sigils and images than me...

"Think of something that represents acting... that represents the actor being taken over by the paper, under control. "

A mask would be the classical representation. Perhaps some permutation of the drama mask?

Sigilized to the poster's own style, of course, but a good symbolic base to build from.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law,

As a practicing magickian who works as a tattoo artist, I thought I should throw in my two cents. My entire chest and stomach are tattooed with magickal imagery, which I started in 1999 of the common era. As my studies have progressed I have found myself increasing dissatisfied with the images, and have realized that I will have to go through the entire thing to correct the "mistakes". I guess the moral of the story is this: do your research very carefully, give it a few years, then research some more. Another consideration is this: if you have a non-magickal artist do the work, the finished design might have some minor flaws. A good example is the Satanic pentagram, which has Hebrew letters at each point. The Hebrew on the front of the Satanic bible already has some stylization to it, and I've seen tattoo artist try to reproduce this image in the skin. The artist in question did not know Hebrew, and in the final design the letters were even less recognizable than on the book. All of which just goes to show that such a venture is extremely vulnerable to vulgar human error.

I hope this advice proves useful to you.

Love is the law, love under Will.

dAb, thanks for the input. The need for the right artist is definately appreciated. I have been working with design ideas- pulling together different symbols that have personal meanings to me along with custom sigilization of my intent for the tattoo. Because tattooing is an art form I would want the artist to have creative input without changing the personal significance.
Some resources I have used for symbols are :

"The Western Mysteries" and "The Eastern Mysteries" by Hulse
"Lieber 777" by Crowley
"Man and His Symbols" by Jung
symbols.com
symbols.net
Traditional theater symbols do not appeal to me as they remind me of "High School Theater" gifts. I'm not lacking in design ideas, I'm more interested in peoples experiences with magickal tattoos.

Well, mine's almost 10 years old, and it still does fine.

I think there's a discernable difference between a magickal tattoo designed to improve your acting skills, and a servitor which uses that tattoo as a material base.

I'd probably advise creating and working with a few servitors using an ordinary material base, before you go about permanantly binding artificially created spirits to your physical body. Servitor-type work can be a bit hair-raising sometimes.

Magickal tattoo's are different, and might be more along the lines of what you're trying to accomplish - rather than actually grafting a semi-independent entity to your body.

Apologies, didn't spot the line in your post where you said you'd already had success with servitors. I'd still exercise a bit of caution and perhaps launch the servitor and work with it for a bit, get the measure of its functionality, etc, before binding yourself to it via the tattoo.

The results I've had in the past with servitors led me to the tattoo idea. I am aware all such entities may not function as desired.
I have given more thought leaving the servitor out.
The intention of the tattoo would be to foster courage, energy and creativity.(pretty big order huh?....and,yeah,who doesn't want those?)
The tattoo would have to be small and on my pelvis or back.
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on the placement of a magickal tattoo? (i.e. as it relates to chakras, etc.)

My two veve tattoos are located along the spine - the white one at the base of the spine, and the black one at the base of the skull. For the later, I shaved the back of my head and had the tattoo done inside the hairline, so it's now concealed by regrowth.

My one suggestion is to find a tattoo artist who's energy you can work with. I have two sigil tattoos, and I have found that the one that was done with the artist with whom I could work with, has been a much more powerful sigil than the other. Although he did not know about the sigil work being done, I was able to use the energy that he was naturally allowing to flow into me while he was laying the lines, to charge the sigil. It was probably my most intense tattoo! [/me swoon]

Use white ink in moderation, only for highlights and small details, it can turn yellowish after a few years.

Good eye Quantum! They've probably found out about the yellowing part by now.
