But more seriously, there are a variety of reasons: fears of loss of political sovereignty, exchanging the pound for the unknown fiscal quantity (and decidedly less evocatively-named) euro. There's also geographical and psychological insularity vis a vis the European continent, and questions about management of expeditionary forces. As a political entity, the EU failed to stop or even mitigate the Yugoslavian civil war, though it might do a better job today. And who knows what special conditions, if any, the UK wanted before joining? You could write 10,000 words on any one of these. I don't know how you could tie these into a theme. Maybe you could just stick to the economic dimension.
