Charles De Gaulle. There you go. Just have to stretch it out about. 1500 words isn't a lot though.

I'm going to nominate that this be moved to conversation because it is more of a request than a discussion. Feel free to beef it up using research from your essay though. Could be interesting.

aye, no problem, its just more likely that politicaly minded people will discuss it here. Charles De Gaulle, what a cranky git, when we didnt want to be in the eec, we were wanted, when we didnt, we werent allowed. p00

Because under EU regulations, the Bureaucrats of Brussels will come for all good English butchers in the middle of the night and hale them before the Holy Vehm of Weights and Measures for using English units instead of the SI-ordained Metric System. Grams and kilos are for dirty Dutch drugs, not good honest English beef.

Hope this helps...

But more seriously, there are a variety of reasons: fears of loss of political sovereignty, exchanging the pound for the unknown fiscal quantity (and decidedly less evocatively-named) euro. There's also geographical and psychological insularity vis a vis the European continent, and questions about management of expeditionary forces. As a political entity, the EU failed to stop or even mitigate the Yugoslavian civil war, though it might do a better job today. And who knows what special conditions, if any, the UK wanted before joining? You could write 10,000 words on any one of these. I don't know how you could tie these into a theme. Maybe you could just stick to the economic dimension.

Try these, if it's not too late.

Socially speaking, I think a lot of it (as inferred by bjacques) is just "Little Englander" fear and xenophobia. There are still large amounts of people in this country who still think the UK is important. I love watching the news in other countries just to see how little coverage we get. To be honest, most of the EU probably don't care whether we join or not.

Personally I think we should, more for defensive reasons than anything else. Right or wrong, if/when the shit goes down I'd like to be friends with the people close by.

And if/when we do join, I wanna be the first person prosecuted for selling (legalised) hash in ounces.

I don't think stabb is talking about current events. More why the UK wasn't involved in the setting up of the instituions in the 50's, blocked from joining in the 60's and and finally agreed to join in 73.
