There is an amazing selection of entire zipped albums of mp3s at this site. Seriously, this a fabulous find, and whoever put this together has some really great taste. You can get the entire Stax/Volt singles box set, a Phil Spector box set, a great many post-punk and Brazillian pop classics, and neo-psychedelia like Avey Tare And Panda Bear. It's like an Other Music-type record store in downloading zip form.

...oh, and I forgot to mention that they also have pretty much the entire Captain Beefheart discography, and a shitload of Serge Gainsbourg...

The Keiji Haino disc is well worth the download. As is anything that Kang does...

I discovered it nearly a year ago, but I thought everyone knew about this!!
Anyway, I should warn you people that all of the albums are there for a limited time. For example, the first time I saw it there was quite a large selection of krautrock and tons of Residents' stuff.
You can tell they are changing the stuff when you try to get into the site and it's like it has vanished into thin air; but they usually are back in less than a day.

You know, I'd forgotten how much I liked PIL. And Beefheart. :-)

I shall try more when I've reclaimed some disk space.

Thanks Flux!

Ignatius, if you want to speed up the process, you should burn big batches of mp3s to cdr in data only mode, so you'll have it all and still have space to d/l more.

I recommend getting the Secret Machines EP that he has - I downloaded it on a curious whim last night, and I love it. I especially recommend it to the Flaming Lips fans among us.

BB -- I only downloaded the last volume and my PC freeware app didn't like it either. Anyone using the real thing, what is it, PKZip, WinZip?

Flux -- your cunning plan would work if I had a burner :-)

I haven't had any problems with winzip so far - I haven't tried the Stax/Volt set, because I already have that. I've got a feeling it should be able to work on a Mac, because the guy did go out of his way to name all the files in a Mac-friendly way.

Flux, what's the Stax/Volt set? I wanna have a clue before a download it...

This should explain everything for you.

Stax/Volt was one of the chief rivals of Motown records in the 50s-early 70s, they were one of the major record labels putting out soul, funk, and r+b.

I keep getting error messages when I try to go to the archive page now. Maybe they're adding new stuff? Or maybe my computer is being difficult, as it is wont to be...

I think it's peak time in Brazil right now. I'm going to wait 'til they've gone home, or tomorrow morning (UK) when they're in bed.

Shouldn't think filenames are a prob with Macs, you have to try harder than with a PC to screw up. Stuffit Expander should unzip no problem, so maybe it's the file. Still, there's enough there to be getting on with.

Usually peak time around here is 6:00pm (now it's 03:30 pm). Either they're adding new stuff or the sudden flow of new visitors crashed the server (let's hope not...) I downloaded the new Flaming Lips album, of which I had listened to some tracks and loved to tiny bright pieces, and the file was corrupted. Gah!

I think that there's a good chance that it may have crashed, because new links to this site have been appearing on a lot of blogs and message boards, and there could be a substantial number of people downloading at once.

Anybody? I am on dialup and would like a stack of the stuff on there - anyone feel like burning some zips to disc for me? I can send exciting antipodean chocolates as recompense. Or some piece of g'day cobber tat. Your choice...

Well, what do you want? I'll hook you up. If I can't get it from this archive, I'll soulseek it if need be.

Q: So what is esss.com?
A: ESSS: Engineering Simulation and Scientific Software.

So it appears "Rodrigo" used his company's server to distribute fine music over the internet. Flux said that the site's been recieving a lot of traffic lately, so I guess the webheads at ESSS found out, eh? Too bad for "Rodrigo", you think he'll lose his job over this one? Yeah, me & "Rodrigo" go way back. I met him at the 4H Club as a kid, and our friendship moved on from there. He was always doing wacky things that would get him in trouble, and when he told me he got this job at ESSS, I said to him, "'Rodrigo' whatever you do, don't use the company's web services to share music." Just then, I saw a gleam in his eyes that I instantly recognized as the beginning of one of his crazy schemes. I think I set the wheels in motion that day. You ask now, "Utopia, do you feel responsible for the illegal mayhem and subsequent consequences caused by "Rodrigo's" misuse of ESSS's electronic information exchange?" To you, I say no. I told "Rodrigo", and now he's gotta pay the fiddler.

Poor "Rodrigo". If only there were more like him.

I once found a bunch of songs in a directory off the Russian Navy's home page. They were mostly crap though.
