Okay, I'm after Interviews and articles and such that delve below the "just a bunch of people like anyone else, really" surface of these people. Anything that has them talking about their musical influences, the way they write songs... that sort of thing. I saw that odd documentary last month, and I'm hepped up for 24hour party people's local release, but in the docco the band themselves just laughed and looked sheepish. What I want to know is do they ever talk serious shop?

I think wherever you look all you'll find is that beneath the surface layer of 'just a bunch of people' is just layer upon layer of 'just a bunch of people'. There was a half decent interview in Sleazenation a while back? The only other things you'll find will be ABOUT them rather than BY them. It might be worth having a look on Ebay for the earlier books that were written about them and Joy Division?

NewOrderOnline.com is the best fan website by a long chalk and they've got a bunch of interviews and articles at http://www.neworderonline.com/articles.asp. Not read many of them, but The Observer one's pretty cool, as is the AmmoCity.com one (though it's a bit short).

I think the "bunch of people" thing is part of their charm- they can make wonderful pieces of music like "Thieves Like Us", or the whole "Low-Life" album, and they don't seem to realise they're doing it. It's almost like they're beautiful by accident.

There was an AWESOME article on them in Uncut maag back in like Jan '99 - 20 pages of interviews and band stories which I had never heard before. Songwriting info, personal dynamics - it's in there. This is worth checking out as it leaves the whole faceless people persona behind as well as talking about Joy Division. Where to find this? Dunno, but you could probably buy a back issue if you were that interested.

i could buy a compilation album but i'm really interested in examining new orders individual records given my fascination with joy division(what's the best compilation album anyway just incase) what are the best records of their early, middle and current/later period?
