Dark Materials on the Radio!

Regrettable Juvenilia

A new radio adaptation of the first book in Philip Pullman's awesomely good His Dark Materials trilogy begins today, on Radio 4, at 2.30pm. Sorry for the short notice, but I only read about it in the Guide this morning... I intend to tape it, obviously, if I can. Terrence Stamp plays Lord Ariel - great casting, although I guess he'd probably be too old to play the role in the forthcoming film (that, or Ian McEllan will snap it up).

Yes, Bill Paterson as the Master of Jordan College too. Lasts for two and a half hours, so may have to abandon my plan of Harry Potter and CofS before hitting the Black Cap. Northern Lights this week, Subtle Knife next and Amber Spyglass the week thereafter. Joyous prospect!

I am filled with awe and the drive to somehow hear this.
And an even stronger drive to see the film. Damn impatience...
Ooh bubble wrap...
Blessed easily-entertained-mind...

You just hit the jackpot, Pirate: if you have RealPlayer, you can listen to this from your computer! Go hither.

I'll be giving it a listen on Monday...

Heard it. Was rather impressed; they got some of the difficult characterisation (Iorek especially) pretty dead on, and used Balthamos as narrator to help out in some of the more action-based bits (and to give Pullman's wonderful prose a chance to shine). It only occasionally clunked. Oh, and Stamp wasn't that great - not very convincing at all in that crucial ending, really; he seemed more frustrated with Lyra than anything else.

But it's worth a listen, and I can't wait to hear the next too. Especially Amber Spyglass. Which I love, with a passion.

I heard some of it- I was supposed to be asleep, but couldn't resist tuning in for an hour or so. Sounded great. Hopefully someone's taped it for me, otherwise realPlayer it is.

Think of an anti-Christian CS Lewis, but infinitely cooler. With armoured bears that drink booze in it.

Brilliant.
I've been wanting something like this for a while now...
Many thanks, Jack.

I thought it was good fun. you don't really need to have read the books to enjoy it, But then again i had already read the books anyway...

Shite, I fucked up. I put a tape in because I was painting the kitchen wall, but only though it was 90 minutes long. Cack.

If I haven't read the book (yet), should I listen to this version?

Like the books, each is proving better than the last. Mrs Coulter is fab.

grant, I think I might be having a hard time digesting the symbolism had I not already devoured the books with painstaking relish. But I am not, perhaps, a good guide. My lips move when I read, for one thing.

There's another thread on the trilogy here, but be warned, it's only really for when you've finished all three...

I need to re-read these. Especially the last one.
