WTC Steel To Be Used In USS New York.

"The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combatting terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11 and the course and strength New Yorkers showed in response to terror." What better way to be remembered, eh?

Does anyone else find this offensive?

Very icky. Also:

The scrap steel will be extricated from the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island on Friday and trucked south to a Northrop Grumman shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. Northrop Grumman will start building the USS New York in Pascagoula in the middle of next year.

Fresh Kills landfill? What genius was responsible for that?

I find it more scary than offensive, really.

There's something frighteningly ritualistic about it. It makes me think of the ship being imbued with the fear and rage and sadness of the people who died in the attack, like some kind of gigantic seagoing metal revenant.

Ghosts, man. Really pissed-off ghosts. Who wants that kind of shit on their ship?

Fresh Kills is of (IIRC) Dutch origin - predates 9/11 by a long time. There are other "kills" on Staten Island.

A lot of the steel has been sold to international jobbers - William Langewesiche's Atlantic Monthly mega-story had a bit about where it was going to end up and what it was going to be used for.

Once upon a time, the sight of the skull and crossbones flying above an approaching ship struck fear in the hearts of sailors. This is a about a thousand steps beyond.

I agree with recycling as much material as possible, but not to this extent. I was more disturbed by a Health Investigation relating to Fresh Kills landfill. FK sounds like one of those places with a big reason why it has bad vibes.

This seems a little like writing names on bombs, an action to increase morale, yet this use of the steel perverts the memory of the people who died. Had they been soldiers my reaction might differ but all they did was work in the office's of a building that was targeted as a landmark. The WTC has been translated as victim of terrorism to victim of war. Violence translates not to peace but continues to be an aggressive force when the steel is put to such a use. This really describes the state of the war-psyche to me and the lack of artistic flair felt by those in power.

I wouldnt really like to be on a ship that thousands of people had died under (well the steel).
But then on the other hand, resources are running out, and it must be a hell of a lot of steel in the WTC. Perhaps publicising what the ship is made of is asking for terrorists to come and get it. Again.

I suspect they'd have more trouble with a warship then they had with the buildings, perhaps that's one of the many reasons they decided to put the steel to that use, to make it less of a target for terrorism. Reusing the same materials in the next building to be placed on the spot would certainly be an invitation to destruction.
