the "something something sleep" line always sounded to me like "I'm in Loser Street", but I'm notorious for mishearing lyrics and am willing to be corrected - if anyone cares.

This from Dead or Alive, who are (let us hope) the former rather than the latter these days. As a pop entity, I mean:

You spin me round round baby,
Right round like a record baby
Right round round round

I can remember the tune but not the lyrics of the verse - it's still trundling thru my head though. Arg ...

Ganesh: I love that Womack & Womack song - just no one post the lyrics to "Saturday Love" by Alexander O'Neil and Cherelle or we'll have to fight.

I looked it up and it should be "i've been losing sleep" but dammit, if only the woman would enunciate properly there wouldn't be this confusion.

Mr Illmatic, it's the basic illogicality of the song that needles me: one might as well complain, while sitting weeping in the library, that books on shelves remind me, baby, of you. Or film dialogue in the cinema. Or the smell of urine in public toilets.

(Romance is not dead...)

Isn't that the whole point? That *everything* reminds me baby of you?

Yours pedantically,

I love Footsteps... because it was the first song playing on the radio after I passed my driving test and went out on my own for the first time in my Dad's car. I hear it and am whizzed back to a small scottish town, with me cruising along in a beaten up old Volvo. Awwww. So I have to stand up for it.

So, like, oxygen in the atmosphere reminds me, baby, of you?

Ah, one day you'll be heartbroken and understand....

Well, hopefully not, actually. You'll just have to take my word for it.

And I have to stand up for "You Spin Me Round Like a Record." It reminds me of being puking-drunk on cider, Birmingham nightclubs and rejection, and still I love it.

Absolutely. I won't have a word said against the lovely Pete Burns, bless his glossy, bee-stung Jagger-lips...

Ah yes, they looked good*, but the nagging insistence of their tune, coupled with my frustrating inability to remember most of the lyrics means just a little riff gets stuck and it's like a loose tooth; I keep mentally probing and fiddling with it.

Ahem. Anyway. I might just go and look up the entire lyrics as a form of exorcism. Once I've sung the whole thing through three times while breakdancing widdershins around a pile of legwarmers I'm sure the ghost will exit the machine.

* for the 80s
