I can't speak for other brands, but I can certainly recommend anything made by Cyberdrives. The one I use can be found here, and I've never had any problems with it so far. Cyberdrives' equipment uses the Nero - Burning ROM (chortle) software, which very fast and, more importantly, very stable.

Well, my TDK does me very well, but LiteONs are dirt cheap and seem to work pretty well from what I've heard.

Really, the mechanisms inside are all the same. As a result, they're much of a muchness.

I've got a LiteOn, and though it was the cheapest CD-RW drive i could find, i've never had a single problem with it. And it comes with Nero, which is the best software. There's one in the Amazon sale for £45 : http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006IJK5/ref=ed_soc__1_2/202-2985304-7603847

and no, i don't work for them...

Well I ended up getting the LG GCE-8481B cd-rewriter. With the boxing day sales and mail-in rebates it was only 64$ (can) +tax. It got good reviews from the sites I searched...so here's hoping I dont blow up the computer trying to install it.
