Astral projection

I nearly did this whilst very stoned on skunk. My, I dunno, spirit body (?) expanded to fill the whole room and I had very convincing auditory hallucinations. It should be noted that besides being stoned I was sleeping in a bed that I never had slept in before (alone). I tried it again in my own bed and suceeded in expanding a bit but not to the previous extent. The third time I attempted it I was in a friend's house but in a bed I had slept in before . I got the feelings that I had gotten just before I expanded the first two times but seemed to be too tired to actually expand my spirit body. During the first, more sucessful attempts (well, the very first time I wasn't trying at all, perhaps the reason why that was most sucessful?) my spirit body remained rooted in my physical body, despite feeling a strong urge not to. I think the second time I was pretty scared of letting it go without somehow protecting the self that would be left behind - the 1st time I was too stoned to do anything but enjoy it but my spirit-body seemed, funnily enough, to have trouble egtting past the physical walls of the room. I'd REALLY like to do this and am very excited about the prospect. I'd be so greatful if anyone could give me some pointers on how to:
-ready oneself mentally and physically for the projection
-make sure the body is protected during the flight
-detatch the spirit body fully from the physical one
-move the spirit body at will - or project it directly to a desired destination if that is even possible
-secure a safe passage back to the physical body and re-enter it safely (I don't want to end up bodiless, I quite enjoy the old pleasures of the flesh) - so I guess I need pointers on all aspects really. If people feel like taking one step of the process and giving me some tips about that particular one I'd be delighted with any advice or any books, websites etc. you recommend. I do find the prospect a little scary albeit exhilarating so I would prefer advice from people with some experience not necessarily with total projection but along the spirit body lines.

Please respond if you have any ideas - it will give me something to practice over the holidays. On that note, enjoy your respective seasonal practices.

When I've done it, its always been sort of accidental. I haven't really figured out how to properly trigger it yet. But when it happens, it always starts with sleep paralysis, and the accompanying thumping in the ears. I let the thrumming wash over me, to where I feel like I'm loosing myself for a bit. From there, I try to move, but can't. So, I keep trying, such as trying to raise my head or look to the left, and eventually find that I am moving, very slowly. Its a lot of effort, but I basicly keep trying to get up until I slowly manage to do so. Last time, I crawled out. But once out, moving about is a lot like trying to fly in a lucid dream. You sort of will it and you go. You can also enter other realms from the astral once you're out, in much the same way you can do so in dream. Returning is easy, but again hard to explain. I sort of "pull backwards" so the cord is reeled in and I'm drawn back into my body in a flash. It feels a bit like waking up, only with spatial special efects as your spirit races back to your body before you open your eyes.

The whole experience feels a lot like a lucid dream. Only, it spooks the cats when I float past them

I have never actually left my body.I would be interested to know if anyone had found this to be a worthwhile thing to do,but I'm pretty convinced that the experience of astral travel is generated internally.
This doesn't mean I think its a waste of time.Far from it,I just think theres a lot of subjective advice on the net about projecting, and light bodies and such, but absolutely no-one knows whats really going on.There are numerous charlatans willing to make a fast buck by implementing their own belief systems in pursuit of answers, but I think seeking them out is a mistake.I simply haven't experienced anything that would cause me to believe that the sensation of leaving your body can be equated with -actually leaving.
I've asked characters in Dreams about this and they say that I need to find a teacher, someone who knows the proper techniques, without any other mumbo jumbo. As soon as people start talking about 'elves' I turn off -or talking to their ancestors or whatever. Its just too damn convenient for my liking.
My ownperceptions of what I would call the 'astral' are of a purely energetic reflection of waking reality, containing abstract behaviour patterns that are largely uninterpretable. Not unlike some hallucinogenic states, then. If it is really a natural evolution for the mind (soul) to explore outside of its own body, then there would be a much stronger consensus for the rules of accessing such a state. As it stands ,everyone has a slightly different take, but a common thread running through their anecdotal evidence is the re-ocurrence of dream iconography.I've awoken from these states with afterimages of glowing hieroglyphics on my retina, its abstract nature causes the reeling mind to interpret real world shapes out of the chaos of energetic interactions.
Keep exploring these energy states on your own is my advice, because I believe that since this is your personal journey you should consider the pioneer nature of it and simply -head west.

"The world as you perceive it will conform to your beliefs about the way it is." If you believe that your body is not a part of you, but that your body is a part of the world that you perceive, or that your body is an abstraction of the boundary relationship between your 'self' and the world which you perceive, then you will be able to travel without taking your body with you.

If you believed that your body was the same thing as the universe you wouldn't need to travel at all. You would be omnipresent.

The problem is that you cannot simply change your belief. Even gnosis techniques only allow subtle changes to belief. More radical changes take time.
