How helpful or unhelpful would you say dope is in regards to magickal practice? what books can give me a detailed sense of how experienced yogi's or different cultures employ the drug in their workings? Just out of curiousity have any of you used dope in your magickal work extensively and if so what techniques or exercises have you found particularly useful in regards to this drug? also does anyone know any good beats i can buy on c.d or tape that will me alter my brain states for magic type work? is genesis P-orridge psychic tv music applicable here?. Cheers

I think most experienced Yogi's will just tell you that the dope is unnecessary, as they can will their consciousness into similar states anyway without it. Though my use of it is, as a mild psychoactive, increased astral/energetic perception. The heighened imagination is useful for psi oriented work, if you have a good enough handle on yourself to do it with a handicap to your self control. For that reason, I find it better for "exploritory" work than serious ritual use when working in a group.

As for music, try Juno Reactor for some good psy trance. Beyond the Infinite and Bible of Dreams are simply astoundingly good CDs that way. Psychic TV is often not really music at all, by the way, so much as audio magickal workings. Neat stuff. Coil does that sort of thing too. Some other neat ones are Sphongle, Atom Heart, Amon Tobin, Bill Laswell, and Boards of Canada. That's enough to break you good to start

second boards of canada cusm, 'music has the right to children' has been required listening on my walkman in the dark as i go to sleep for months now, lovely repetitions. Often thought it might be useful in this regard though is the relative shortness of the tracks on that album adequate to really trance out?

Maybe. The short tracks give a lot of breaks that are not not so good for deep trancing, though it is an awfully fun cd all the same.

The best are hour or so long DJ mixes, if you can find some good ones. Good psytrance is sometimes hard to come by that way.

You may want to try Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth or Coil's How to Destroy Angels. Looking back I'm not sure I'd use any PTV stuff cos frankly a lot of it is very variable.

On the dance-music-as-ritual-music, you may want to try Coldcut's Journeys By DJ mix, which is quite a headfuck. It is however very funky, as opposed to the funkless white boy misery of psytrance. Similarly, you'll probably want to try out Miles Davis' On The Corner or Bitches Brew.

I'd second Miles Davis in his weird 70's 'Bitches Brew' period, also worth listening to some Sun Ra which is extremely mind affecting by itself - the Michael Bertiaux of the jazz world.

Just to subvert this further away from the more obvious occult influenced stuff like Coil/Psychic TV/etc.. you might want to check out some later period Lee Scratch Perry in his 'dub adventurer' phase as a useful backdrop to such experiments.

John McLaughlin's "Inner Mounting Flame", Santana's "Lotus", and the Dark Star on "Live Dead" are fantastic. Bitches Brew, and also "Live Evil" (another Miles experiment). Future Sound of London's "Lifeforms" cd is an amazing trip. Any of the Hard Desert Trance cd's by DJ Brian are fantastic as well.

Re: Weed and magick. Try Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" and "Sex & Drugs". Also check out Crowley's "A Garden of Pomegranates".

As far as Yogi's not being into this type of thing, this is a pretty general statement. Some understand the value of psychotropics while other's see them as a hinderance or quick fix (Indian Saddhu's are are good example of the former - though they tend to be a pretty loony lot). If you're curious, you would be better off studying the shamanic path, rather than that of the Yogini.

Big second on Lifeforms, and John McLauchin. Thoug Inner Mounting flame is a bit hard. I think Between Nothingness And Eternity (also Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughin) is a better trancy one.

Speaking of Dub: Aswad - A New Chapter of Dub is pretty freaking amazing. Gotta love dub. Music made while hi to be listened to while hi for the purpose of spiritual meditation.

I'll also reccomend The Gorillaz. I've reached my deepest levels of trancendental meditation to date to that cd. Good stuff.

Maybe some stuff by The Necks: Silent Night, or Sex, perhaps. Maybe even Aether.

As for Miles: hell yeah. Go for Big Fun, I think. It's darker than Bitches' Brew.

Absolutely second / third / fourth dub as mediational / transformational music. Arguably the best form out there for that stuff. Way better than 99% of white boy industrialism. Though these days I'm heading more into dancehall and ragga (not very meditiational at all in a conventional sense but it works for me) and a bit of roots.

Recommended Perry: Arkology, especially things like Roast Fish and Cornbread, which makes you feel like you've slipped into an elision in space time and are looking at the future from the inside of matter. Open the Gate is heavy visionary dub, terrible recordings but great stuff. The Congos' Heart of the Congos is Perry produced and possibly the best record ever made.

Dub is fab but there's lots of shit about so beware.

Lee Perry faves: "SuperApe" & "Black Ark in Dub".

I also love Orb's "Orbvs Terrarvm" - a fantastic journey.

For the organic vibe try Rythmn Devils "Apocalypse Now Sessions"
