SPOILERS INSIDE - New X-Men: Death and the Maiden

...because it's going to be a Cuckoo, isn't it? I think that we have been set up for this from almost the beginning --e.g., we've seen what happens to the hive mind when one of five goes missing in Imperial. And this is the point of Glob referring to them as "four" and QQ crossly correcting him "Five! Five!" Don't you think?

Someone in the other thread kind of went "eh" about the Cuckoos, but they are my absolute favorite character. So I will be sad, and also I'm sort of interested in how they might adapt in the event of tragedy.

I think you’re right that it’s one of the Stepford Cuckoos. Morrison has stated that a “beloved character” will die. Given his twisted sense of humour, I think he's referring to Sophie - the Cuckoo that Quentin Quire revealed he fancies in 134. The X-men appear to be protecting the Cuckoos on the cover of 137.

And if it is Sophie who dies consider the impact on Emma - she'll be baying for blood.

Someone from X-fan spotted this in Morrison's Q&A column on the Crack website - make of it what you will:

"The Stepford Cuckoos are my fave mini-players.  Do you got plans for them? They're sooo cool.  What would happen if one of them died? Would that affect the rest of them severely? Dumb question, but I'm curious to know. They remind me so much of a dark V.C. Andrews "Flower in the Attic"-esque quality.

GM - >COUGH< ERR, NO IDEA >COUGH<....."

I believe you just may have hit the nail on the head, Persephone. I can't fault your logic in the slightest.

I initially thought it would be Xavier, and I think I've even posted here to that effect, but it occurs to me that the slowly-developing subplot of what is and isn't okay in the realms of mind control/telepathy would seem to indicate the he'll be around for a while yet.

Very slowly developing sub-plot. In that I notice its presence, but the development is imperceptible.

Are they 'beloved', though?

Typical obfuscation by that man. *tt*.

Prolly will be (one of) them, but I'd still rather it were the Professor - Morrison kills avatar, after subjecting him to some examination concerning his methods, and so on.

Quireboy: so it's true.

*sob*

I didn't exactly figure this out. I think it was Duncan who gave the tip in the other NXM death thread, and I went back and looked and was convinced.

The bastard, he's been planning this the whole time! It's horrible, we met them when they were children. It's so much more effective than the other deaths that have happened --e.g., the one in Hong Kong, and the ones in Paris.

Will the Cuckoos become, basically, human? Just four smart blondes, eh. It's like a freaking object lesson about making sure that you don't depend too much on four other people for your powers...

This is all well and good, but hasn't Ethan Van Sciver essentially confirmed here that one of the staff at Xavier's will die in #140, even if Sophie dies as well? (I do think Quireboy's idea is cool, though, and find it quite plausibel that Sophie might die in 'Riot').

Where/when did Ethan do that? Well I think it's possible we might see several deaths over the Riot/Murder at Xavier arcs.

That thread is right here, Ethan's post is the fourth from the start.

He never actually states that it is one of the staff, but he stongly hints that it would be.

I love it when he does things stongly. Turns me on like you wouldn't believe.
