It's ok, New Order's come to save me from them, hurrah!

being a thread of talking about New Order. and if anyone wants to mention how they've hung onto any kind of 'cool' and creativity when the Manics are dead and buried (or fucking should be), not my problem.

Actually I don't know the first thing about New Order, but I thought I'd reply because no one else seems to have, and I find it very sad when that happens.

But just for the sake of appearances, um ... I liked that repeated guitar riff on that song they did a few years back where they were on the beach in the video.

Oh, and the football one. John Barnes and his unqiue accent. Cool.

oh. Um. I don't like the Manics and actually I didn't like Everything Must Go (and everything since then has been like Pear Drops) because I thought it was well pony crap actually so I was quite glad when New Order came on to the radio seeing as it was Blue Monday and I always liked that song though I prefer the altogether more depressing Joy Division who were altogether more epic.

New Order. Yes. I must learn more, only actually owning Substance and most of Joy Division. Oh, and Get Ready, but that's modern-new-fangled stuff.

I think the thing that surprised me most about listening to Substance for the first time was actually how gradual the change from JD to NO is; it's not just "Ian's dead, change of direction folks!" It's a lot more gradual, and Substance is basically (to me) the documentation of that shift. I mean, Ceremony's fantastic, but was almost too Joy-Division to be true when I first heard it.

There are so many levels they work on; for me, the fact they work often despite Sumner's lyrics is one of the strongest. But Hooky's where it's at. And the textures, the sounds they find... just perfect. Yes. They HAVE hung onto "cool". And they've definitely hung onto creativity, sideprojects aside. I'm off to listen to Substance again and then I'll try and be more useful.

Oh, and I really covet the just-released Retro boxset.

Didn't like the last New Order album. Heard it playing in a cinema before the movie came on and said "god, what is this, it's like some terrible brit-pop group trying to go all dancy and failing" and my friend said "it's the new New Order album" and I thought, god help us all!

Which is ironic, cos it was in an empty cinema a few years ago that I first heard (or at least, first heard and paid attension to) 'Temptation', and thought, this is fucking incredible!

Well, what with Joy Division being officially The Best Band Ever (according to an exhaustive poll conducted amongst... well, me) it would be kind of hard for New Order to top that. But they have a bloody good go. I really like "Get Ready", actually- I prefer it to "Republic" (though I kinda liked that too). For me, "Low-Life" is the ultimate New Order album. Probably because it's the first one I heard when I was MUCH younger and more impressionable, but also cos it has "Subculture" and "The Perfect Kiss" on it.

Although "World In Motion" pissed me off. Partly because I hate football, and thought the rap was just plain embarrassing, but mostly because Keith FUCKING Allen was involved. Bastard. And Sounds (I think it was) had a headline "Love Will Terrace Apart", which as far as I was concerned at the time was blasphemy.

Liked 'Crystal', didn't much like the last album otherwise. Like other bands, they've got an extremely strong bunch of early work that it's difficult to match. Have you put the complete box set on your Christmas present list then Plums?

(Almost on topic)- All of you. Yeah, you at the back, too. If you haven't already, go and get the Joy Division "Heart And Soul" 4-CD set. Of everything. And I mean, everything. I tell you, if my house burned down and I could rescue one thing, then (assuming, of course, that my dog had already escaped safely) that would be it.

Go buy it. NOW! NOW, I TELL YOU!!!

Then, if you have any cash left, get either "Substance" (all the singles) or "Low-Life" (the BEST studio album) by New Order. Or both if you're rich.

If you're offering, sweetness?

Just acquired 'Still' (Joy Division) - a double album with some live tracks from their last gig ever.

Veeeeerrry happy.

Also worth getting (but very hard to find now) is the live JD video "Here Are The Young Men". Gasp at Barney looking like he really shouldn't be up so late on a school night! Swoon when you realise that even as a young man, Hooky had the atttude! Marvel at Ian Curtis' appalling dancing! And watch Stephen play drums rather well!

Bestest bestest band ever. (Deborah Curtis' "Touching From A Distance" is also a bloody good read- though it was simultaneously kind of upsetting and kind of uplifting to realise that my hero was actually quite a normal guy, and a bit of a git to boot.)

Yeah in person Curtis was supposed to be a bit of a burk wasn't he? Have seen New Order a couple of times live, they now look like your fat unkles but does that really matter? They do Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere and Blue Monday still so I'm not complaining.Blue Monday has to be one of the best spooky pop moments in history.

Yes, let us celebrate New Order/Joy Division... I've been listening to them both quite a lot lately. My favorite band if push comes and shoves. Not really too thrilled about the Retro box set. How many times can you re-release the same songs on different compilations? Many apparently. Which is fine, but what about those great New Order songs that have never made it to CD? Temptation (original 7" & 12" versions - the latter is so much better than that weak version on Substance), Ceremony (the original 7" where it sounds like they can barely play - in this case the Substance version is infinitely better, but this is still interesting), um, there's that great Peel session from '98 where they do Isolation & some others in great updated form... then there's studio outtakes and new songs live from all those bootlegs in my 80s youth. Ah yes. I'm with the Chairman: get the Joy Division box set. Looks great, sounds great, JD complete, can't be beat.

My favorite New Order album? Power, Corruption and Lies or Brotherhood.

Also, has anyone seen the Live at Taras Schevenko (sp?) video/DVD? I used to love that back when I first saw it in the 80s - especially the rough version of Temptation.
