O.K bare with me here... I've got a Port Wine Birthmark on the right hand side of my face. 2000 years ago I would have been revered as a gift from the gods to the drudically inclined Britannia. 500 years ago i woulda been killed at birth as a child of Satan. Today it's meerly seen as a defect reparable by shooting lasers at cha. My question is does anyone hold any stock in these physical "signs" or is it all nonsense created by prejudmental cultures reading what they want into whatever comes to hand? Seems a bit of a dumb a question now iv'e wrote it but would still appreciate input

Cheers
Pot.

Such anomalies are, if nothing else, unique. As such it can be said that your creation was attended by unusual circumstances, illustrated by the birth mark on your face.

In the earlier days of human society natural phenomena were accorded great significance and often described in mythic terms. The limited amount of quantified knowledge left much of reality a mystery. As science and mathematics progressed and more of the natural world was "explained" (i.e. quantified into a predictable equation), the magick of life faded into materialist empiricism. Hence our modern culture regards little as truly magickal or miraculous, lending far more credence to the definitions of science. Thus, to most, your birthmark is probably just a birthmark.

But it should be noted that in many indigenous cultures those born with deformities, abnormalities, or physical marks are often the ones chosen for the shamanic path. These unique characteristics are seen as indicators that the individual has a special standing in the society, that their very creation proceeded from a point of power. It's as if the Gods were marking the individual as a special servant or mediator between the waking world and the dream, or etheric, world. In this case the mark on your face might single you out as one predisposed towards interfacing with the deeper planes of existence.

Besides, in a world where consumerism and profit have melded into a homogeny of blandness, any uniqueness should be cherised and worn proud.

And if you start speaking parseltongue, then you've really got something going on...

What a delicious post, Potguns, keen considerations in a short paragraph.

I agree with chris23, and would also add that those kind of birthmarks still hold power over the observers, power which you can explore if you hadn't done already, and no matter how much emphasis is put in being oblivious to it, it plunges straight towards the unconscious. But you probalby already know this.
