Seemed a bit frivolous for the Switchboard, but we can always move this thread there if a good serious discussion develops.

New Labour v. the Conservatives: can you tell the difference?

You scored 10 out of a possible 10
You must work for a thinktank to have such hair-splitting knowledge. You probably have the latest white papers on your christmas wishlist.

Bit disingenous, that. It doesn't take a genius to figure some of those out: New Labour's crimes are public and well-documented enough. And the title did annoy me slightly: after all, it's not a question of telling the Left from the Right, it's a question of being aware that Labour abandonned left-wing principles years ago.

Still, always good to be reminded just how inhuman a pack of scum-sucking hyenas Tony and his cronies are...

Complete balls-up on the last post. Try the test at http://www.politicalcompass.org (sorry I won't link, that was the cause of the mishap). At the end of the test, or if you click the "Analysis" link, followed by the "View analysis" link, you will see the New Labour drift otwards the authoritarian right.

As a good labour party member, I thought I'd point a couple of things out here...

1) Part of the reason the two parties seem so close is that the conservatives never fucking say anything anymore. If you go read any of their policies, you do see that they are significantly more 'right wing' than Labour.

2) You never see the Labour party flirting with racial politics in the way the conservatives often do.

3) The number of 'queer rights' bills introduced by labour in the past few years...

It is unrealistic to expect anyone to conduct large scale socialist style wealth redistribution through taxation in a modern western democracy. With the public perception being that the failure of the soviet countries equates to the failure of socialism, it would be political suicide to pursue any policies that could be painted as being in that domain.

I think the interesting movements in the next few years may be in the area of environmental policy - the cuntryside alliance types are a powerful lobby in the conservative party, and the BNP et al are said to be flirting with Green politics (presumably seeking a return to a rural, aryan idyll...)

Having said all that, I think Labour's relationship with privatisation is disgraceful (and lots of other things besides) but that disappointment over the lack of 'socialist' policies can easily distract us from the good things Labour have been doing.

Yeah, 'cos David Blunkett's never played the race card, has he?
