UK Employment Law (Not Again!)

Well, it's not quite for the same reasons as last time, thank God. Wouldn't want to go through that again.

It's like this: I've developed two ongoing health problems as a result of my job. Continuing in the role - or indeed any role that involves long periods of sitting down or wearing headphones - will exacerbate the two conditions.

What responsibilities should my employer have to me under UK law? Can I expect at least to be found an equally well paid role that avoids the sources of concern? I'm already planning on joining the Union tomorrow. What other courses of action should I take?

Any help would be apreciated.

Aaarrghh! Somewhere I've got a whole shitload of books/booklets on employment law that the GMB guy gave me last year when I was staff rep at my place. BUT I CAN'T FIND THEM! I'll keep looking and let you know.

A good union will probably do wonders for you with this, exp, so that was a shrewd move. I don't work where I did so don't have the employment law books lying around to consult, sadly.

Sounds like you might do well to get an Occupational Health referral also. They will be well on top of your fitness for particular tasks within the organisation and will make recommendations to management for you.

Myself, I have no problem sitting in one place for prolonged spells, fortunately. I also do staring blankly into space, simultaneously. I gather that's called multi-tasking these days.

Cheers.

All sounds good advice. The CAB should have some information [http://www.nacab.org.uk/], here's a link from the TUC about health & safety [http://www.worksmart.org.uk/health/index.php]. Here's a link to all the free employment law stuff some woman with a lot of time on her hands has found [http://www.venables.co.uk/individc.htm#employment] - there's even firms in your area. Most lawyers will do a 30 minute consultation free on the phone.

Hope you health improves. Definitely a good move to join a union. Sorry I'm so brief.
