Power animals: What if someone said your power animal is a toad? A scorpion?

Well, my subconscious mind just did. Last week, actually. Uppon my asking for confirmations, signs, at least 4 or five synchronicities were provided within a four day period.

The reaction? At first disbelief ("but... a toad?"), then I imagined it as being just one of my "spirit helpers" (I've got a few, including plants, a horse and a crow). But after the coincidences, my respect for the creature increased proportionaly to my interest in seeking mythological information on toads.

Finally I started a journey and, after taking care of my garden, there it was: a gigantic toad, taller than me, that jumped without making any noise and which I could have rode if it was needed. It was actually beautiful, all greeness and calmness, and I just want to tell the world my toad is fucking great.

I'd like to ask some questions, as well:

1 - Mythology on toads is so bloody hard to find - could you help me with this? I found something about fertility, and about how they used to be familiars to witches, and how their body parts were used in potions, charms, amulets, etc.

2 - A toad... who would have said? I never really felt a "connection" with these animals, nor see them very often (last time... 10 years ago). Unlike many people, though, I never felt the urge to run away when I bump into one - I remember one episode in which I watched a toad on top of a garden table with absolute fascination. Besides, always liked the fact that they eat insects. But appart from this... never imagined! Well, does anyone have a clue on how these connexions (the person and her power animal) are made? I tend to think it's because there's something about the toad symbol that is an issue in my life and has to be worked with.

3 - I'm sure the the power animal as well as the totem thing has been discussed before. If so, does anyone have the thread bookmarked?

Thanks a lot again.

Yay! I am not 100% sure about my power animal but due to a toad being the first living critter I saw on my first acid trip, I think I too might be 'toad totem', as they say. I have never really minded this - like, toads have hallucinogenic skin, and that's soooo cool. I know nothing about toad mythology though. Congratulations, Pacha, and good to hear from you again!

I've thought about this recently, actually, but I'm having trouble organizing my thoughts, here...

Okay. There's this fantasy series I really like about an assassin, Vlad Taltos, who's a witch. He has a telepathically-linked familiar, Loiosh, who looks sort of like a little chicken-sized dragon. It's largely an action/adventure series, so Loiosh is mostly there to bite people and scout areas and make wisecracks, but once in a while, the witchcraft is described in detail, as is Loiosh's role in helping with the spells. The author uses a lot of tactile detail in these, so Loiosh is described as handling various "threads" of the spell, and in one case helping to channel an unexpected burst of psychic energy that would have burned out either Vlad's or Loiosh's mind if either had been working alone.

Blah blah blah. What I got to thinking was, a toad can't do anything "cool", but they're since they're heavily associated with witches, they must have major ability to help a witch with the mojo.

I seem to remember reading that psychedelic mushrooms and psychedelic toad skin ended up tangling to give us the word "toadstools". Maybe these psychedelic effects were seen as heavy duty magical aids in the British Isles (I assume, since I'm talking an English word, unless it's a translation of something I don't know).

Anyway, that's just my intuition on where you might find information: poking around the origin of the word "toadstool", hopefully getting at actual historical stuff instead of 20th century witchcraft.

You think a toad is confusing? My power animal is apparently a pink fairy armadillo. I didn't even know what the fuck it was until about a year after I first met it. I still don't know what it means.

Anyhow, back to toads. Looks like you've got some decent leads three, so I'll just give you some personal impressions of the species.

Moisture-loving but not amphibious (unlike frogs). The tadpole stage is narrower-bodied and more brown than the frog. Some species can be pretty long lived. Like dark, secluded places, such as hollows in trees. Can reach quite a size. Lay their eggs in water. Toadspawn comes in long skiens of eggs, like ropes of black pearls filling the shallows every Spring.

MC: that is sooo CUTE!! And it's "vulnerable" too! Awwwwwww!!!!!

On toads: Here's a Huron myth.

I'm sure I've read a toad v. frog myth, but might be conflating that with a Zulu story about Lizard and Chameleon. OOoooooo! this is it! It's in the moon!

Toad does a lot better in dry situations than Frog. Toads change shape, from water to land. They have beautiful eyes, and are all *very good* at camouflage. They ooze poison when threatened, and if they feel frightened, they can produce a copious quantity of (rather clean, it must be said) urine.

(You're sure it's a toad and not a Horned Toad, I guess. They're actually desert-dwelling lizards that can squirt blood out of their tear ducts.)

Here's a Lao folk tale about Toad.

He's apparently not very well liked by the Inuit. However, say the Fali of Sudan, that that rules out half of humanity.
"...'humanity is divided into two clans, those of the tortoise and the toad (the world arose originally from two eggs, one tortoise and one a toad's, which turned in opposite directions while their insides went round the opposite way. From these two eggs stemmed the first division of the universe). These two clans represent 'the wild earth' and 'the Human earth'."

I'm not sure about this, but this children's book says Toad was a bit of a trickster for the Maya - it's a tortoise vs. hare story, only with Toad in the tortoise spot, beating Deer by having well-placed friends (rather than simply plodding onward).

The Andaman Islanders made Toad dance when he sucked up all the water. He danced so hard, the water flew out of his mouth, ending the drought. According to that page, Toad is halfway between Snake and Frog.

There's a Toad Clan in the Creek Nation - that might be a profitable source of totem information. Ditto (and I'm embarrassed I didn't know this) the Seminole Nation. And, apparently the Zuni.

This Lakota story has a toad changeling in it.

This page has lots of toads and frogs, from the Far East especially. This passage stands out:
The toad, like the frog, is also associated with fertility which can be considered an aspect of prosperity.

Sherwin Nuland in The Mysteries Within (NY: Simon & Schuster, 2000) says, in his chapter on the uterus, that that organ was actually thought to leap about inside the woman's body like a toad. The unstable psychological state that used to be called hysteria was once attributed to the imaginary activity of the toad inside the woman [230].

The fact that the organ is susceptible to warts only confirmed its toad-like nature. Significantly, the uterus is the only organ which in votive offerings is represented by an animal rather than a simplified form of the actual shape. [Votive offerings are small representations of a part of the body left, either before or after a healing, at a place of worship.]

Nuland says that the toad was considered a Seelentier (German for soul animal) and the relation between the mythic animal and the reproductive organ is a tautological or circular one. One contemporary votive toad-uterus offering appears with a cross etched on its back as if to indicate its essential spiritual nature.

There are pictures of some of these votives here.

Toads are freaky.

I'm not sure if I should start a seperate thread or not here, but I figure the question is somewhat relevant.

What if your power/spirit animal/ whatever happens to be something that you are terribly intimidated by? Even stranger and possibly more disturbing, what if it happens to be an animal which seems to be the antithesis of you and your personality period?

I ask this because I have been getting persistant Scorpion synchs for months now. A dream or two as well. They started up when I was really experimenting with sigils in earnest, and started to fade when I got my first tinge of the "Oh Shit, It Might Be Real" fear and backed out of magick for a bit. Now I'm taking it up again and here Scorpion is again.

Now I'm not as talented as grant at web-surfing (Although, I'd be curious what you could find grant..) but, um... most of the information I have found (Mesopatamian Scorpion guards, Voodoo Loa, etc) tend to lean towards... Well, they're mostly pretty nasty.

Add to that a huge mindfuck with the knowledge that Grant Morrison's dealing with scorpion loa almost killed him, and you have a decided anxiety on my part in my willingness to sit hir down for a beer or two.

So, suggestions on how to deal with this scenario? My astral and otherworld communicative abilites are nil (I read that 'What worlds have you been to?" thread with barely contained jealousy), although I'm willing to start focusing more on developing them if that's what it'll take. Let me know, since Christmas is coming up and all and I haven't the faintest idea what to get for a venoumous arachnid.

I'm at home on a sluggish dial-up connection, so I can't research right now, but you could start making yourself feel a little easier about scorpions if you have any friends born in November.
Scorpio is the first association I'd have with these little guys.
They just get a bad rep cuz they sting. And don't make honey, like bees do.

Tower:
What if your power/spirit animal/ whatever happens to be something that you are terribly intimidated by? Even stranger and possibly more disturbing, what if it happens to be an animal which seems to be the antithesis of you and your personality period?

Actually, this is more common than you would imagine. Often a person with a phobia about Spiders discovers that Spider is his/her animal ally. What does this tell us? It points to a difficultly for the person in claiming his/her power. When you finally end up face-to-face with Scorpion, even though you might be quaking with fear, it will be a major turning point for you. It will show that you are able to conquer your fear in order to embrace your own potential, and to acknowledge all aspects of your own self.

I've worked with Scorpion, by the way, and have the highest respect for him (or her, but let's the use he for the moment). That is one take-no-prisoners ally, and he tends to work with people who are of a martial disposition. Of course Scorpion is bad-ass, and advertises the fact, and that tends to put the willies up many people. I guess people have an issue with dealing with a creature that makes it plain it can kill you. Though, that's the beauty of working with Scorpion too - he's a no-bullshit ally, and will always state what's on his mind. He's not often one for mysteries and subterfuges(unlike some other animal allies). Personally, I like his no-nonense approach. However, most animal allies have their "dark-side", even the Toad, and we have to learn to embrace all aspects of them.

mines a turtle (green sea turtle)...see thecosmic turtle thread for how i met him... try and talk to your totem/power animal/ally or whatever they may well be (my turtle told me what he really is cos i asked)...i also asked him if he could help me see my aura, as its something ive never done before. .pure crazyness.

I also asked him for some proof that my turtle was *real* i.e, not a figmant of my mad imagination, he said he would. The next day i was playing cards with some friendsand i heard a voice in my head. i asked a friend to pick a card at random and look at it. strait away, 3 of spades...and so it was. hes given me a few other good hints and tips, but somethimes its just good to play with them....well, with a turtle is not really like play, its more fascinating than fun.

meditate and talk to your toad... i have a big green candle that i light after meditatin to talk to my turtle, although it isnt really neccessary, more a psychological aid.

The Scorpion that killed Orion the Hunter in Greek myth.

Orion killed monsters. It took a little bug to kill him.

Here's a "wonderful story on dharma" called "The Saint and The Scorpion."

And these guys pop up a lot in web searches.

You might also be encouraged by depictions of Serket, or, if you'd prefer,Selkis, Serqet, Selket, etc.

Plenty on her here.

You'll find that and much more here, at khandro.net, which also had a great page on toads, linked to above.

excerpt: Tibet's poet-saint, Jetsun Milarepa (1040-1143) did not begin as such. In his youth, Milarepa studied black magic in order to seek revenge on the relatives who abandoned him to a life of bitter poverty following the death of his parents. According to his student Rechugpa (1084-1161) he invoked a giant black scorpion to attack his uncle's house.

Scorpion Mudra
The fascination or threatening gesture (Skt. tarjini mudra) consists of a fist with forefinger and little finger extended; it is called the "forefinger-scorpion gesture" (Tib. Digzub Chagya.) Legend says that when the apostate king Langdarma was attempting to suppress Buddhism in Tibet, mahasiddha Nubchen Sangyé Yeshé terrified him by using the gesture to create a scorpion apparition "as big as nine yaks" that appeared above the king.

and

Scorpion Protectors

The goddess of transformations, Isis, was liberated by the god of wisdom, Toth, and given a company of seven scorpions to serve as her bodyguard. They form a circle around her.

In the front arc are Petet, Tjetet and Matet. To her left is Mesetet and to her right, Masetetef. Tefen, with most of the venom, is behind her to the left, and Befen, the 7th is beside him.

Depicted as a beautiful woman with a scorpion on her head, Selket was the Egyptian scorpion-goddess who eased childbirth. Her scorpion minions could strike down the wicked, but she could intervene to save the lives of those who were innocent.

A scorpion wheel charm is associated with a (Tibetan Buddhist) Nyingma Yamantaka practice.

In the fire puja of Vajradaka (Tib.: Dorje Khadro) who is a fierce and wrathful deity invoked to purify negative actions, black sesame seeds are used to represent problems and regrets. They are arranged into the shape of a scorpion which is then consumed by fire as practitioners visualize all physical, psychological, emotional hindrances being annihilated compassionately by Dorje Khadro who joyously devours them for us.

Here's a weird one - I was killing time in a library yesterday and decided to flip through the myth encyclopedias in the reference section. According to one of them, the scorpion was used in the Christian church of the Middle Ages as a symbol for Judas and for the Jewish people as a whole. In a negative way. Since they killed Jesus.
It seems like there's room in that reading for a reversal (since without Judas, there would be no crucifixion...).

Agreed. Thanks loads grant, and everyone else. I knew it wasn't quite as bad as I was making it out to be, but I just needed a harmony of wiser voices than I to talk me through the anxiety. It's interesting you bring up the Scorpio astrological sign, since every life-chagning close female friend I have had has been one- without fail.

Interestingly enough, I suddenly recalled during all this that as a kid I had one of those scorpions encased in glass that you get from touristy desert states here in the US. I just found it one day in our basement even though my family had never been out west ever. I might have to go look for it again over the holidays.

Should we rename this a power animal thread for other like questions? (or maybe a "please grant look wacky mythological shit us for us please!")

According to gypsies, spotting a toad when you are thinking of doing something concrete is a blessing, a divine signal indicating to undertake what is being thought.
When I asked about this to my friend Yarko, a gypsy sorcerer who lives in France, he answered:
-Have you ever seen a dead toad?
-Yes, many times. Why?
-Wasn't there anything that called your attention?
-No.
-Next time look closer. The dead toad does not corrupt, it dries.
-Why?
-Because it possesses energies. We use toads to heal magically, but also to make curses. The toad is the main of all the evil amulethes that are left near the victims' houses. But, above all, toads bring good omens.
Upon my incredulity he smiled.
-Try it. You'll be surprised.

No cannibalizing our spirit guides now.

I used to work in a hospital laboratory. One time we actually had a guy come in asking for really funky blood tets to test for, no kidding, leprosy. We thought that was odd enough, until one of our pathologists asked us if he was from South Carolina.

Apparently, the muscles between the plates and skin of armidillos are a potential breeding ground for leprosy. It's the only other animal besides humans that can get it. So certain Southern states that have armidillos can very very rarely transmit this to another human. Especially if someone may have indulged in "Armidillo wrestling"

Don't ask.

Just a-wondering, here - how do you "know" if an animal is your power animal?

Now, there are two animals that I suspect may be connected to me in some way. One (I don't want to reveal them as I haven't spoken with them as yet) appeared to me as a sort of hallucination during a really light meditation/trance, to my suprise, and a few of my dreams. The other one... well, on this site - www.madness.crowcity.com - there is a "totem animal generator" thing, which I was pretty skeptical about but tried anyway. The animal that turned up flummoxed me completely - I couldn't think of anything AT ALL that would connect me to it, and its never turned in any of my dreams before - so I decided it prolly wasn't to be taken that seriously. At least, that was until I realised that for a number of years I've had piece of this animals JAWBONE in my possesion..! Found it on a beach when I was on holiday with my grandparents. Kept it, though I was never too sure why - not the kind of thing you usually find in the possesion of young girls.

So. Now I'm a-looking for a way to contact these guys, or verify how it is that they are connected to me. Any suggestions?

That web page seems to be a simple synchronicity generator - it's just randomness. I don't think it has anything to do with a "totem" or "power animal" or anything, since those things are supposed to have some sort of deep (familial or subconscious) association with you.
