I have. They're certainly interesting. I thought they were firmly rooted in the NYC "Queer For Death/Intellectual S/M" culture of the late 1980s, that gave us Lydia Lunch, Foetus, Richard Kern, Adam Parfrey, Peter Sotos and Exit Magazine, but thanks to Monkey Boy it's 1990 all over again--crap economy, a Bush in the White House and a looming war with Iraq--in this cheap-ass Empire of Disorder, why not revisit the culture of those days too. Somebody else my be thinking the same way, since the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow came through last month for their 10th anniversary tour (I saw them back then too)
I've seen Police State and War Is Menstruation Envy, both about 20 minutes long, are on a collection called Geek Maggot Bingo. Police State stars Zedd and creepy NYC character actor Rockets Redglare (Talk Show, Down By Law, Mystery Train). Zedd gets arrested for no particular reason and is tortured and beaten by police officer Redglare. The movie ends with an outburst of cathartic violence. WIME has a Annie Sprinkle getting it on with a burn victim in a New York club.
Mike Cosloy of Conflict Magazine used to get in feuds with Zedd, and Christian Gore of Film Threat! printed a fake obituary and tribute of/to Zedd, as in "Zedd's dead, baby!"
I saw his films in about in 1990 or '91, when he came through Houston, Texas. At a local club (Emo's, RIP) a friend of mine tried to enlist him in rushing some crap band off the stage, and almost got him arrested for brawling. In person, he was actually a quiet, mild-mannered little guy.
So yeah, check him out for sure. |
