Sound's effect on body and mind

i was wondering if there is any writings on the net about the effects sound has on the body and mind. i've heard the thing about a bass sound low enough to turn the body to jelly, but is this true? i think Throbbing Gristle did some theorising about this subject but are there any facts?

i remember an interview with alec empire in spin magazine where he was questioned about the frequencies atari teenage riot uses in their live performances. he claims that the euphoria one feels while using ecstacy and listening to bass frequencies at 120 bpms is a sensation similar to being inside your mothers womb. ATR lowers the bass and raises the mid frequencies in order to disturb that sensation... i think it was compared to the feeling of being hunted by a pack of wolves.

Info about a sonic weapon.

To wit:
The operator chooses one of many annoying sounds in the computer — in this case, the high pitched wail of a baby, played backwards — and aims it at us. At 110 decibels, we were forced to walk out of the beam's path, our ears ringing. Had we stayed longer, Norris said our skulls would literally start to vibrate.

The Hafler Trio are very much concerned with sound and the effect that certain frequencies can have upon body and mind.

Erin Bauer is a producer/musician who's influenced by h3o and works with something called 'psycoustic' sound which is the idea of an Italian sound theorist called Guillermo Testi who I interview recently [plug!]:

Nice bloke but totally over my head to be honest.

There's also an interview with Erin Bauer here:

But you can't hear any of their stuff yet cause the label they've set up hasn't released anything yet and they keep getting equipment confiscated for noise polution and stuff. There's a whole bunch of these Scholtz Vitrine people from all over the place doing this kind of thing. They are dead vague and silly at times but I think psycoustics is about astral sounds or something? Sounds like that. There's an organization called SPOARM or SPEARM that are trying to have this sort of stuff made illegal or whatever - apparently they've played concerts using infra-sound generators and that sort of thing but it sounds unlikely.

No, I don't really get it, either.

Nice:

"It not only affects the ears, but is also works directly on the internal organs, there is a rubbing between the various organs because of a sort of resonance. It provokes an irritation so intense that for hours afterwards any low pitched sound seems to echo through ones body". Gavreau's work was partially aimed at military applications.

That must be what h3o mean by 'echoes in the body' then. Doesn't sound like much fun really.

I remember reading somewhere recently (i forget where, alas) that someone built a scale model of a policeman's whistle (the kind with a pea inside that makes a high, warbling sort of sound), which was about 6 feet square (if i remember correctly) and had to be operated by a large air compressor. the unfortunate chap with the job of turning the thing on had all of his internal organs liquefied almost immediately and, unsurprisingly, didn't survive.

La Monte Young has an installation in New York called The Dream House which involves sinusoidal noise generators at prime interval phase shifts. Four of them, in the four corners of the room, so that every point in the room is a unique sound and every path through it a unique melody.

There's also a weird blue-and-magenta light installation in the same space, making it even more fun.

"Young's sound environment is composed of frequencies tuned to the harmonic series between 288 and 224, utilizing numbers with factors of only 9, or those primes or octave transpositions of smaller primes that fall within this range. The interval 288/256 reduces to a 9/8 interval as does the interval 252/224. Thirty-two frequencies satisfy the above definition, of which seventeen fall within the range of the upper, and fourteen fall within the range of the lower of these two symmetrical 9/8 intervals. Young has arranged these thirty-one frequencies in a unique constellation, symmetrical above and below the thirty-second frequency, the center harmonic 254 (the prime 127 x 2).

Young has stated that: "This is my newest and most radical work; the Rayna synthesizer has made it possible to realize intervals which are derived from such high primes that, not only is it unlikely that anyone has ever worked with these intervals before, it is also highly unlikely that anyone has ever heard them or perhaps even imagined the feelings they create."

General response to everything in this thread: Cool!

To lower the tone considerably (no pun intended), I have heard people speak in hallowed tones of the legendary "brown-out" bass frequency which supposedly, well, the name says it all I guess..

When I've seen them live, bands like Magnetaphone [4AD] and Stray Dog City [TAR] always make me need to go... you know... like, to the toilet... It's something in the 'bottom end'... of the sound I mean.

Wayne Coyne on How Will We Know? (Futuristic Crashendos) from Zaireeka:

CAUTION: CDs No.1, No.3, and No. 4 contain extremely high and low frequencies that can cause a person to become disoriented, confused or nauseated. Each speaker contains a high and a low frequency. CD No.1's frequencies are 20hz and 14khz. CD No.3's frequencies are 10hz and 14khz. CD No.4 contains 7hz and 10khz. These tracks should NOT be listened to repeatedly at high volume. Make sure infants are out of listening range. This track should not be listened to while driving. CD No.2 contains the "ear friendly" part of this composition, it has a normal frequency range.. The reference for this song is the untrue "urban myth" that goes something along these lines: "being exposed to extremely high and low frequencies at high volume for extended periods of time has some strange psychological side effects - though their hearing was temporarily impaired the participants reported feeling as if they could predict the future"..?

I read a fair bit on infra-sonics a while back. Whilst working on a sound installation in Portsmouth I had the chance to have a bit of fun with a low frequency sine wave. The installation invited people to make sounds in the various ways provided whilst my associates and I mixed the incoming sound into a tasteful soundscape. The bass end of this mix was diverted to a sound seat which people could sit/lie on and feel the sound. I decided the effect was not dramatic enough so I started dropping a periodic low frequency at around the resonant frequency of human genitalia (around a low G). This produced a kind of itchy, tickly sensation *ahem* down below. Now, this installation was at the Royal Festival of the Sea, many of the punters were old sailors and boat enthusiasts and were not expecting a psychedelic sound and light show. The punters would often enter our tent and, finding it a soothing place, would come in and sit on the sound seat. This is be when they'd recieve their stimulation. I remember one elderly couple very fondly; he shot up onto his feet and shuffled around the seat examining it, she shot up with a fantastic "Whoop!" and gently eased herself back down and stayed there for a good ten minutes. Every time I pleasured this old lady, a naughty smile appeared on her face. I enjoyed pleasuring that old lady very much.

If I can dig up any of that old info I'll try to post something up. I remember an excellent article on infrasound in a small publication called "Noise Gate". Can't remember which issue though.

i had forgotten about Atari Teenage Riot. i heard Alec say their concerts were intended to make people riot. i never thought he meant through the actual sound.

I've got 'Bang' by Hafler Trio. Each track is a kind of experiment in sound and its effect on the mind and body. They apparently used infra-sound in live performances. They were influenced by the philosophy of Gurdjieff who also hinted at the power of sound and art: the notion of objective music, sound and architecture that would have very specific effects upon the subject [so a certain piece of music or environment would make the audience cry regardless of cultural background].
