The question is this. Does anyone know what this botanical name refers to? As in Phalaris (Aesthu-something) -picta-.

Thanks for your help (in advance)

Thanks for the help. Yes that is the species I'm talking about but what I want to know is specifically what does the suffix Picta on the end mean? I don't seem to be able to find it anywhere.

Are there any plant experts here?

try http://members.tripod.com/~Hatch_L/gterms.html down at the bottom of the page. Incase that doesn't work, i've found - painted(like a picture), to paint, brightly colored and such.

Yeah, picta is Latin for painted- I found a tortiose called something-or-other picta on Google when I was looking for your plant (before I realised that I should be checking in the Lycaeum, duh.) I think it must be a variant of yer basic Phalaris arundinacea; the -picta suffix probably just means it's a bit more showy or something.

Is this a garden plant we're talking about? Have you been smoking the herbaceous border again?
